A further five set win by Tankard fill in Kevin Johns over Daniel Jansen proved to be a match winner, the experienced Johns winning 11-3 7-11 11-8 5-11 11-6 in a topsy turvy match. Victory came for Tankards despite Wayne Carmichael and Liam Wood winning three and two singles respectively. In one of the four five set matches Carmichael scored an 8-11 11-3 11-7 7-11 11-9 victory in an outstanding match against niece Kate Carmichael.

Victory came for Cookes despite Weightmans pair Shannon Bowen and Reece Kurrle winning three and two singles respectively. Cookes number two Paul Kealley played a key role in his team’s victory by winning two singles and partnering skipper Jackson Tung to defeat the talented pair of Bowen and Kurrle who had raced out to a two games to love lead.

Cookes number three Russell Walder took to the table against Lee Leeson with the match standing at five rubbers all, he narrowly took the first two games 12-10 in each, Leeson lifted to win the third before Walder fought back to take the fourth and enable his team to pick up the four points.

PENNANT TWO:

The first round of the 2025 winter comp started off strong with two closely contested games. The association welcomes back several returning players to Pennant 2 including Peter Midgely, Terry Martin and Michael Hensgen. As there are five teams in Pennant 2 this season, Cookes Pools & Spas had the bye this week.

Choices Flooring Mildura 6 Ashley Morrison (3), Terry Martin (2), Andrew Jones (1) defeated Pinnacle Packers 5 Marcus Cimino (2), Peter Midgley (1), Peter Fitzpatrick (0).

After a season away in 2024, returning No. 2 Terry Martin started the season with a confident win over opposing No. 3 Peter Fitzpatrick, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8. Packer’s captain Marcus Cimino then took his side’s first win, besting Andrew Jones in straight sets 11-4, 11-7, 11-7. The ever-consistent Ashley Morrison then stepped up to deliver a decisive win over Peter Midgley, taking the game in three sets, 11-7, 11-6, 11-0. Morrison and Martin then paired up to take on Cimino and Midgely in the first doubles match, but failed to topple the Packers duo, going down in three sets, 12-10, 11-5, 11-8.

On to the fourth singles match which saw skipper Cimino take on Martin and gain the third rubber for his side, again in straight sets, 11-8, 11-7, 11-8. Morrison then had a tough customer to deal with in Fitzpatrick, who started strong in the early sets, losing the first 11-13, then taking the second 11-9, but ultimately going down in the last two, 3-11, 6-11. Veteran Midgley then took on Jones and

after winning the first set 11-1, had some trouble from Jones in the next two but was able to bring home the win, 12-10, 11-9.

The score now at 4 rubbers to 3 Packers’ way, Choices Flooring needed all the wins they could get but after giving it their all in the night’s second doubles, they lost the game to Packers, 6-11, 11-13, 9-11. With Packers now just one game away from winning the night, Choices Flooring had to dig deep to turn this night around, which they were astoundingly able to do, winning the last three singles games in a row. First Morrison went up against Cimino and after dropping the second set, secured the win in four sets, 11-9, 12-14, 11-5,11-3.

Then Martin went up against Midgely and took a hard-fought win in three, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. And to seal their victory, Jones defeated Fitzpatrick in straight sets, 11-8, 11-7, 11-3. A solid effort from Pinnacle Packers and excellent work from Choices Flooring to come from behind and take the win.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 18 games to 17.

Mallee Meats 7 Jason Gifkins (3), Harry Gujral (0), James Jarvis (2) defeated Weightman’s Packaging 4 John Fitzpatrick (2), Sony Sefer (1), Therese Fitzpatrick (1).

A solid first round win for Mallee Meats over Weightman’s Packaging with Meat’s No. 3 player James Jarvis making a significant contribution by taking 2 singles wins.

Weightmans started the night confidently, with Therese Fitzpatrick taking the first rubber over Gujral in straight sets 11-5, 11-9, 11-4 and then big brother John Fitzpatrick having a little trouble with Jarvis in the second rubber but taking the win 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-2. Teammate Sefer then went up against Gifkins but could do little against the opposing No.1, losing in four 11-13,

6-11,11-5, 5-11. The first doubles was a one-sided affair, with Meats dominating over Weightmans, 11-2, 11-6, 11-6, levelling the score 2 rubbers all.

In the fourth game of the evening, Gujral kept the pressure on captain Fitzpatrick in a lengthy five setter, losing the first set 4-11, taking the second 11-8, dropping the third 8-11, evening the score in the fourth 11-7, but succumbing in the fifth 4-11. Despite this well-earned victory, the next few games would not go in Meats’ favour. Gifkins gained his second singles win, besting the younger Fitpatrick 13-11, 11-6, 11-9 and then Jarvis then took out Sefer, besting the seasoned veteran in just three sets 11-7, 11-3, 11-7. The second doubles yielded more disappointing results for Weightmans, with the Fitzpatrick siblings going down in straight sets 3-11, 7-11, 7-11, bringing the game score to 5-3 in Meats’ favour.

Gifkins then took his third singles victory and the winning 6th rubber by defeating Fitzpatrick comfortably in three sets 11-5, 11-8, 11-2. Sefer then engaged in a long scrap with Gujral and obtained his only singles win, winning in five 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, and in the final game of the night Therese Fitzpatrick and Jarvis duked it out in another five setter, with Jarvis prevailing 10-12, 12-10, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10.

Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 26 games to 15.

Starting off with round number 1, Regional Taxation Services faced Exposed Signage and Apparel, and Sammy’s Slammers took on Weightman’s Packaging. There are some strong teams here and we look forward to some great matches in the weeks ahead.

– Regional Taxation Services 7 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Sam Campbell 2) d Regional Taxation Services 4 (Karly Leach, Deegan Kerslake 2, Brendon Johnson 1)

Regional Taxation Services are a talented team, and their lineup of Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Sam Campbell, and Hayden Wilson all went in ready to play for that top spot on the ladder. Their opponents Karly Leach, Deegan Kerslake and the promising Brendon Johnson of Exposed Signage and Apparel will have the same aspirations of being at the head of the ladder.

This was an outstanding match of high quality so early in the season and many long five setters, five in all. In her first singles match Sabrina faced Brendon Johnson and this was the first of her three five set singles matches for the night. Brendon surprised Sabrina as she did not expect to go to five sets and both players in warm conditions worked hard for each point, Sabrina held it together and won the match 11-6, 11-6, 9-11, 5-11, 11-3 a solid win by Sabrina and a great debut by Brendon.

In her second match, it was time for Sabrina to play Deegan, Sabrina was too steady early and won the first two games narrowly, Deegan then lifted to win the next two games with good serving and some fine top spin forehands. In the fifth Sabrina showed her experience and held off the fast-emerging Deegan to in 11-8 12-10 9-11 6-11 11-7.

Later in the battle of the number ones Sabrina and Karly, spectators witnessed what they do each time these two play, a five setter. Sabrina was away early again winning the first two games only for Karly to fight back to win 7-11 5-11 11-9 11-8 11-5. This was a good fight back by Karly against a very good opponent.

Earlier Karly had suffered her first singles defeat for quite some time at the hands of the improving Sam Campbell who has been training hard on a Monday night. Karly raced through the first game to defeat Sam 11-2 however to her credit Sam did not lose focus and was able to grab the second and third before Karly levelled at two rubbers at all. The fifth belonged to Sam and she was able to control the fifth and break away courtesy of some fine forehands going on to win 2-11 11-6 14-12 11-13 11-4

Regional Taxation Services took a lead of 4-3 going into the second doubles courtesy of the two singles wins by Sam and Sabrina however RTS could not trouble the scorers in the doubles format. In the first doubles Karly and Deegan outpointed Sabrina and Sam in straight sets. The second featured Karly and Brendon against Sam and Hayden and it was the Exposed pair of Karly and Brendon who took the points in four sets and the score now stood at four rubbers all.

The four points were now up for grabs with three singles to go, in an amazing statistic both RTS players Sabrina and Sam raced out to a two love lead against their respective opponents Karly and Deegan and in mirror image results they would both be overrun to go down in five sets enabling the Exposed combination to grab the four points.

In the final rubber Brendon showed that he will be a good recruit downing the talented Hayden Wilson 11-3 11-7 8-11 11-9

In a match where no player won three singles the doubles both won by Exposed proved to be the difference. Sabrina, Sam, Karly and Deegan all won two singles and the aggregate race will be full of interest this season.

WINNER: Exposed Signage/Apparel 7 d Regional Taxation Services 4

Games 27 to 19

– Weightmans Packaging 9 (Nhat Dat, Steve Parker 3, Leo Parker 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 2 (Koby Grace 1)

On paper this match looked difficult to pick a winner however someone forgot to tell Weightmans Packaging that and they burst out of the blocks quickly and remained in control for the remainder of the match. Ryan Hensgen of Sammy’s Slammers will gather his troops, and they will bounce back next week.

The first block of singles went the way of Weightmans all in straight sets and the most impressive win here was by the Packers number three Leo Parker who proved too steady for Slammers number one Ryan Hensgen, Leo winning 11-8 13-11 11-5.

The first doubles was a must for the Slammers and Ryan and Koby continued the straight sets trend defeating Nhat Dat and Leo 11-9 11-8 11-6.

In an entertaining five set slog Weightmans Steve Parker then outlasted Ryan in a match of many long rallies 4-11 11-5 11-8 6-11 11-5. Weightmans now took a 4-1 lead and then improved that scoreline with Nhat Dat then defeating Yen in straight sets.

Sammy Slammers number two Koby Grace knowing he needed to win then accounted for Leo in four sets 11-9 4-11 12-10 11-8 a great match and the score now 5-2 in Weightmans Packaging favour.

Weightmans then flexed their muscles and would take the next four rubbers to win 9-2 in a strong start to the season by them.

The first of these four was the second doubles and a classic with Nhat and Steve just taking the points 11-13 11-6 11-7 4-11 11-8 over Ryan and Yen who battled hard.

The remaining three singles saw Nhat, Steve and Leo defeat their respective opponents Ryan, Koby and Yen.

Courtesy of their strong win Weightmans Packaging will head the ladder by percentage. This trio will be a strong combination, both Nhat and Steve won three singles while Leo won two.

For Sammy’s Slammers a slow start but they will improve, Koby Grace was their best performer winning one singles as well as taking part in the first doubles victory.

PENNANT FOUR:

Our 2025 “winter pennant” is underway with the temperature at 38 degrees.

Not only was the weather hot but so was the competition at the table.

Welcome to new players Leanne Wilson and Eddie Parker who both played in winning teams. Also Jakob Grzan, after filling in in the summer pennant a few times , is now the new number three for Tankard Dental. With his match at five rubbers all Jakob stayed calm to win in five sets and give his team a hard-fought victory.

After a break from table tennis Weightmans Packaging number one Glenn Leeson is back as the “general” of the Packers and he will offer lots of experience.

Jake Hines after resting from the summer pennant returns to play for Dunkley Scales.

Round one featured two close matches.

– Tankard Dental 6 (Leanne Wilson 2, Ildi Healy, Jakob Gran 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Curtis Crabtree 3, Nathan Beard, Conner Burnett 1)

Teams: Mallee Meats – Curtis Crabtree, Nathan Beard and Conner Burnett

Tankard Dental – Leanne Wilson, Ildi Healy, Jakob Grzan.

Mallee Meats were off to a flyer in this match and after the first three singles Tankard Dental had to regroup as they failed to score a win in this block of matches.

Mallee Meats number three Conner Burnett scored the best win of his short career defeating the talented Ildi Healy. The match started as expected with Ildi winning the first two games before Conner grabbed the third by the narrowest of margins. He then proceeded to take control winning 5-11 2-11 12-10 11-2 11-8 well played Conner.

Nathan Beard then accounted for Jakob Grzan in straight sets while Meats skipper Curtis Crabtree followed up with another straight set victory over opponent Leanne Wilson who has been showing good form at the grading nights and Monday hitting.

With Tankard Dental down 0-3 and the match slipping already Leanne and Ildi stepped up to the table and recorded a very solid win 11-9 16-18 11-7 11-8 over Curtis and Nathan, a great four set battle. Ildi and Leanne then won their following singles matches to level the scores at 3 rubbers all, a great comeback.

Ildi held off the steady Nathan Beard in three sets 14-12 11-4 13-11 while Leanne had to shake off the improving Conner who had gained confidence from his earlier win. This was an outstanding match and in a narrow victory Leanne took the points 11-5 7-11 9-11 11-6 11-9 after trailing one game to two.

Tankard Dental then took the lead again temporarily when number one Curtis defeated the Meats three Jakob in straight sets.

The second doubles was going to be crucial to both teams and what a match this was, Curtis and Conner started well winning the first two games by the narrowest margin over Leanne and Jakob. At this point the Mallee Meats pair then commenced a long comeback and in a match that went on and on Leanne and Jakob recorded an outstanding win 9-11 13-15 13-11 11-7 11-7, the scores now four rubbers all with 3 singles to be played.

Leanne then gave her team the lead 5-4 for the first time with another hard fought four set victory over Nathan. In an impressive debut Leanne had won two singles and featured in both doubles victories.

Mallee Meats skipper Curtis then levelled the match by defeating Ildi in three sets the second and third by the barest of margins, the final scoreline 11-4 11-9 11-9.

With the scores at five rubbers all the two youngsters Jakob and Conner then played an amazing match which would decide the four points. With some long rallies taking place both boys were keen and Jakob after three sets took a two games to one lead, Conner then hit his straps with some great forehands , he raced through the fourth surrendering only one point. With the momentum going his way, Conner took the late ascendancy in the fifth and with the score 10-8 in his favour he looked to be home however Jakob kept plugging away and saved four match points, the score now 12 points all, what a thriller.

Conner missed a big forehand and it was Jakob, with his first match point, and remaining calm he took the final point to win an amazing match 11-8 15-17 11-8 1-11 14-12. His team had gained the four points much to the delight of teammates Leanne and Ildi.

In the end victory in both doubles by Tankard’s was vital while for Mallee Meats skipper Curtis had played well to win three singles.

WINNER: Tankard Dental 6 d Mallee Meats 5 Games 20 to 22

– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Glenn Leeson 3, Gary Leach, Eddie Parker 1) d Dunkley Scales 4 (Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach 2)

Teams: Dunkley’s Scales – Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach, Jake Hines

Weightmans Packaging – Glenn Leeson, Gary Leach, Eddie Parker

Dunkley’s took the early initiative courtesy of Jenny Leach and Maria Starikov who accounted for Gary Leach and Eddie Parker who was on his debut. Amazingly the first match of the round was the singles between Jenny and Garry Leach who not so long ago celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.

Hopefully things weren’t so frosty on their big day as they were in this match. Despite dropping the third Jenny controlled this match winning 11-9 11-5 8-11 11-2 and Gary was left wondering” what happened there??

Don’t worry Gary there will be other opportunities.

Maria then proved too steady for new player Eddie Parker who discovered why Maria is called the “Brick Wall”

“General” Glenn Leeson then steadied the ship winning in straight sets over Jake Hines 11-6 11-5 14-12. Jake played very well in the third. Glenn then partnered Gary in the first doubles, and they were able to level the match at two rubbers all courtesy of a 11-2 11-9 11-8 victory over Maia and Jenny.

Dunkley’s then snatched the lead back with Maria defeating Gary in four sets.

From this point Weightmans Packaging would stamp their authority on the match by winning the next five rubbers. These were not easy wins and the first featured Weightmans skipper Glenn outlasting Jenny in an entertaining five sets 11-6 8-11 5-11 11-6 11-4. A brave effort by Jenny who has been training hard on a Monday.

Eddie Parker then recorded his maiden win with a four-set tussle against Jake Hines.

Eddie is the nephew of Pennant Three player Steve Parker and cousin of Leo and I’m told Eddie is a very talented golfer. Eddie then teamed with skipper Glenn to win in three sets over Maria and Jake. The score now 5 rubbers to 4 in Weightmans favour.

The two captains then met and despite Maria playing well it was Glenn who was able to win 11-8 11-7 11-8 in a long match. This win to Glenn allowed Weightmans to take the four points and start the season in a positive way.

Gary then defeated Jake in four sets to improve the score for Weightmans while Jenny then won her second singles with a four-set win over Eddie.

For the winners Glenn won three singles while Gary and Eddie won one each,

Maria and Jenny tried hard winning two singles for Dunkley Scales.
