In round two results Carmichael lead his team Weightmans Packaging to their second successive win to sit at the head of the ladder. Their 8-3 victory was an excellent team performance with Carmichael, and teammates Russell Walder and Lee Leeson winning three, two and one singles respectively. Their opposition went in to this match missing father and son Paul and Jamie Kealley and they were replaced by Casper McCarthy and debutant to pennant one Marcu Cimino.

Weightmans in addition to winning six singles also were able to taste success in both doubles. For Tankard’s Rohan Reimers won two singles. The highlight match was the singles victory by Weightmans Russell Walder over winter teammate Casper McCarthy in a lengthy five setter. Walder has started this season well and defeated McCarthy 5-11 11-7 11-8 8-11 12-10.

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Kate Carmichael 3, Thanh Nguyen, Jason Gifkins 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Reece Kurrle, Liam Wood 2)

Regional Taxation Services remain the only other undefeated team winning a close contest over Choices Flooring Mildura 6-5 who were without number two and three players Leon Brown and Daniel Jansen who were replaced by Liam Wood and Quentin Clark respectively. The highlight match here was the first doubles, the RTS pair of Kate Carmichael and Thanh Nguyen took a 10-6 lead in the first game before opponents Reece Kurrle and fill in Liam Wood rattled off six winners in succession to take the first game and in an exciting finish they took the points narrowly 12-10 4-11 9-11 11-6 11-9 a topsy turvy match.

For Regional Taxation Services Kate Carmichael won three singles including a three-set victory over Reece Kurrle which contained many long hard-hit rallies as these two seem too each time they play. For Choices both Kurrle and Liam Wood won two singles each.

With the scores locked at fiver rubbers all Jason Gifkins for RTS outlasted Quentin Clark in four sets to allow his team to remain undefeated.

– Mallee Bearings 6 (Jackson Tung 3, Liam Wood 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Mark Dorman, Dylan Wood 2, Ed Hung 1)

Mallee Bearings with a 6-5 victory over Cookes Pools & Spas recorded their first win of the season on the back of skipper Jackson Tung who again won three singles and to cap off a successful night he took part in both doubles’ victories with teammates Liam Wood and Tom Morrison. Liam Wood also played his part with a straight sets singles win over Ed Hung in the first match of the night however he would consider himself unlucky going down narrowly in two five set matches against Mark Dorman and brother Dylan after he had le two games to love against both.

For Cooke’s Dorman and Dylan Wood both won two singles and Ed Hung one, however the lack of success in the doubles was costly as they seek their first win.

– Mallee Meats 8 (John Fitzpatrick, Mark Cleary, Due Truong 2) d Pinnacle Packers 3 (Rasin Bhuiyan 3)

Mallee Meats were able to recover strongly from their disappointing first round loss with a decisive victory over Pinnacle Packers, with no small thanks to number 3 substitute, Duy Truong, who took 2 singles match wins.

In the opening match of the night, Truong defeated Packer’s Ryan Peterson in straight sets 11-7, 11-6, 11-8. John Fitzpatrick then took the second win of the night over sister Therese also in straight sets 11-7, 11-3, 11-5. Packer’s captain Rasin Bhuiyan halted Mallee Meat’s progress with a win over Mark Cleary 11-9, 11-4, 11-5.

But Mallee Meats were unfazed, continuing to dominate in the first doubles match which pitted Fitzpatrick and Cleary against Bhuiyan and Peterson, with Meats taking the match again in straight sets 11-9, 11-4, 11-5.

Next up was Fitzpatrick vs Peterson. Peterson fought hard but went down 11-9, 11-8, 11-8. Bhuiyan then seized a win from Truong, but not without difficulty, losing the first 11-3 but then cleaning up the next three 11-7, 11-2, 11-4. With the score now 4-2 in Mallee Meat’s favour, Packers really needed another win, but Fitzpatrick was unable to help her team-mate’s efforts, losing to Cleary 11-9, 11-6, 11-5.

The second doubles saw Fitzpatrick and Truong take on Bhuiyan and Fitzpatrick, with the former taking the win in straight sets 11-7, 11-5, 11-8 to secure their victory 6-2. Bhuiyan then took his third singles win, beating Fitzpatrick 11-7, 13-11, 11-7. In the battle of the number 2’s that followed, Cleary marked up his second singles win for the night, beating Peterson 11-8, 11-7, 11-6. Truong also took his second win for the night, defeating Fitzpatrick in a struggle of a match, losing the first 8-11, then knuckling down 11-7, 11-9, 11-9.

Final score 8 rubbers to 3 and 25 games to 10.

– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Harry Gujral 3 Josh Arnold 2, James Jarvis 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Ashley Morrison 2, David Sergi 1)

Weightman’s Packaging took a win over Cookes Pools & Spas in a tightly contested night which saw Weightman’s number 2 Harry Gujral score three singles match wins, defeating opposing number 1 Ashley Morrison.

In the opening game James Jarvis struggled against opposite number 3 Nhat Dat but prevailed 14-12, 11-2, 6-11, 11-4. Skipper Josh Arnold then comfortably beat David Sergi in straight sets 11-7, 11-7, 11-7. Cookes captain Morrison was looking for his first win, but came off second best to Gujral after losing the first two sets 8-11, 3-11, then clenching the third 11-9 only to lose the fourth set 6-11.

With Cookes down 3 games to 0, they buckled down in the first doubles and after losing the first two sets 8-11, 5-11, they clawed their way back to win 11-5, 11-7, 13-11. Arnold then continued to push Cookes back with a win over Dat in four sets 11-3, 13-11, 11-3, 11-5. In a bold effort, number 3 Jarvis took opposing 1 Morrison to five sets, but couldn’t quite get over the line, losing 11-8, 5-11, 5-11, 11-5, 6-11. In another close five set contest, Gujral narrowly defeated Sergi, taking the first 11-8, Sergi then firing back, winning the next two 6-11, 11-13. The two then grappled in the fourth, with Gujral taking the win 12-10, and then sealing the deal 11-1 in the fifth.

Weightmans then secured their sixth rubber in the second doubles over Morrison and Dat 11-3, 11-9, 11-5. Arnold then scraped it out with Morrison, taking the first set 11-5, then fumbling 2-11 in the second. He took the lead back 11-7 in the third, but Morrison proved too strong, winning the last two sets 6-11, 10-12. Gujral, showing exceptional form, won his third singles match, besting Dat 8-11, 11-6, 13-11, 11-9. Cookes were able to get one more game under their belt before the end of the night, with Sergi taking out Jarvis in four sets 11-5, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10.

Final score 7 games to 4 and 28 rubbers to 18.

PENNANT THREE:

Although only the second Round of the Summer Comp being completed, Dunkley Scales produced another win, to secure their position on top of the Ladder.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Koby Grace 2, Hayden Wilson, Ildi Healy 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 5 (Ted Cleary 3, Steve Parker 2)

The encounter between Dunkley and Exposed Signage and Apparel was closely fought, with Ted Cleary, STTA’s youngest member and playing his first season, helped out Exposed, winning his three Singles. But the end result came down to Koby Grace’s consistent play and Dunkley winning both Doubles, with the Match finishing 6/5.

Weightman’s Packaging had the most convincing win, with a 7 / 4 victory over Regional Taxation Services. Unfortunately Weightmans, Gary Leach had to miss this week, with a Shoulder injury,

but his fill in, Raj Gujral, another Young Gun, collected 3 individual wins in his Singles matches, which was too much for Regional to pull back from, even though both Doubles went Regionals way.

Mallee Meats were also involved in a tight battle, narrowly beating Sammy’s Slammers, with Mallee’s Captain, Karly Leach standing tall for her team, with 3 Singles Wins.

– Mallee Meats 6 (Karly Leach 3, Curtis Crabtree, Jenny Leach 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Sam Campbell, Deegan Kerslake 2)

Jen didn’t have the game to put any pressure on Sam, with the match falling to the Slammer’s (11/4, 11/8, 11/5).

It was thought that the Deegan verses Karly match would have been a pressure game, with Deegan’s armory, but Karly played some terrific shots to wind it up in three (11/5, 11/7, 11/6).

The first Doubles saw Sam and Andrew doing their best to break down Karly and Curtis’s game. The match did go to four sets, but the pendulum was always swaying to Mallee Meats, which brought up their third Rubber (11/6, 7/11, 11/4, 11/6).

Curtis has the game and the shots and gave it his very best, but Sam was determined to get her Slammers back on track, with a tricky three setter going her way (11/9, 11/9, 12/10).

Andrew’s nerves got the better of him, when he came up against Karly, in a match which was totally under Karly’s control and led to a 4 to 2 lead for Mallee (11/5, 11/0, 11/2).

Jen found the Deegan demolition out of her reach, but did take two sets to eight, leaving herself with some hope for their next encounter (11/8, 11/4, 11/8).

Sam and Deegan were up against Karly and Jen in the Final Doubles, with four tense sets, as Sammy’s Slammers were fighting to bring the night back to even. Mallee did get the Slammers stewing in the middle two sets, but they were too powerful and found the Rubber they were hoping for (11/6, 6/11, 15/13, 11/9).

Next to face up were the two Captains and even though Karly was dodging bullets from Sams bat, she brought her A game once again and amassed her third win, putting Mallee back in front (11/5, 11/9, 11/6).

This was the Match of the night in Pennant 3, with Deegan and Curtis taking their games to the next level, in a mighty five set tussle. Curtis nabbed the first two sets, which both went out to nine. Then as much as Curtis fought for the win, Deegan seemed to find another gear in the final three sets, with the Rubbers being leveled again (11/9, 11/9, 11/13, 10/12, 10/12).

So, it was to come down to the last match to decide the night and this was between the two number three’s, Andrew and Jen, which had both shaking in their shoes. As was mentioned, Andrew had made quite a few improvements to his game, so Jen had to focus hard, in a well fought four sets to reward Mallee with the win (11/8, 11/5, 9/11, 11/8).

WINNERS : Mallee Meats 6 to Sammy’s Slammers 5.

GAMES : 21 to 17.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Koby Grace 2, Hayden Wilson, Ildi Healy 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 5 (Ted Cleary 3, Steve Parker 2)

To start off the night Ildi was challenging Ted and as young as he is, his Table Tennis skills are above his maturity. Ildi was able to sneak one set from him and out on some pressure in the others, but it would be Exposed Rubber (11/7, 11/8, 9/11, 11/9). Connor did a great job in the first set against Dunkley’s Koby, pushing it out to 8, before Koby pressed go and halted the match at three (11/8, 11/3, 11/1). After Hayden gave him a little scare in the first set, Steve was successful in bringing home another Rubber for Exposed when he went up against finished it off in a four setter (6/11,12/10, 11/9, 11/5).

The first Doubles brought the scales back to level, with Dunkley’s Koby and Hayden cleaning up in three sets, over Steve and Connor (12/10, 11/2, 11/4).

This clash between Koby and Ted turned out to be a ripper, with both doing their darndest to get the win and after five sets Ted was declared the winner (11/4, 9/11, 8/11, 12/10, 14/12). Steve and Ildi both have a very calm nature, which enables them to stay focused. However, Steve’s experience in this encounter was just too much for Ildi to deal with (11/4, 11/3, 11/4). Hayden and Connor had a good skirmish, with Connor throwing in some crafty shots, but it was Hayden who would walk away with the Rubber, to put a little pressure back onto Exposed (11/8, 11/5, 11/9).

The last Doubles was going may have been a deciding factor, when Koby and Ildi put a stop to the positive start by Steve and Ted. After a five set tussle the match fell to Dunkley, bringing everything back to level once again (10/12, 8/11, 11/2, 11/5, 11/8).

Koby wasn’t prepared to go down in another match and pulled out all his tricks to seize the game from Steve in four sets (6/11, 11/8, 14/12, 11/6). Ted produced his third win, when he was up against Hayden, but not before a well fought five setter (11/8, 11/5, 10/12, 7/11, 11/5). With it coming down to the last match to declare the winner, Conner did his best, but Ildi’s concentration and ability to keep getting them back was too much for him, with a victory going to Dunkley Scales (11/2, 11/6, 11/6).

WINNER : Dunkley Scales 6 to Exposed Signage / App  5.
