After a short break following the completion of the recent winter competition the Sunraysia Table Tennis Association have commenced their 10-round summer pennant.
This is always an exciting time as new teams are selected giving the opportunity for players to advance grades. Pennant two aggregate winner Tom Morrison has been promoted on the back of an excellent season while pennant two regulars, youngster Jamie Kealley and the veteran Jason Gifkins made their debuts in pennant one as well.
– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Kate Carmichael, Thanh Nguyen 2) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Jackson Tung 3, Liam Wood, Tom Morrison 1)
Despite this being the first round of play there was some excellent table tennis played with the closest match being the 6-5 victory by Regional Taxation Services over Mallee Bearings despite
Bearings skipper Jackson Tung winning three singles. Tung’s teammates Liam Wood and Tom Morrison also won a singles each however it was their inability to win a doubles that proved costly.
Regional Taxation Services teammates Kate Carmichael and Thanh Nguyen won two singles each while Carmichael participated in both comfortable doubles’ victories with Nguyen and new player to pennant one Jason Gifkins. Carmichael missed out on a clean sweep losing her final singles in straight sets to Jackson Tung whose early season form is ominous.
– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Russell Walder, Lee Leeson 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Mark Dorman, Dylan Wood 2)
Weightmans Packaging led by Wayne Carmichael accounted for Cookes Pools & Spas 7-4, Carmichael has commenced the season as he left off in the winter by winning three singles as well as participating in both hard-fought doubles’ victories.
For Cooke’s Mark Dorman back after a season off played well to win two singles, he was rusty early trailing Russell Walder two games to love before recovering to win in five sets. His only blemish in singles was a four-set loss against fellow leftie Wayne Carmichael, this was a hard-fought match as they normally are between these two who have had many fine contests over the past forty years.
Dorman’s teammate Dylan Wood also started the season well winning two singles however again it was the lack of success in the doubles which resulted in a win for Weightmans.
– Tankard Dental 8 (Rohan Reimers 3, Paul Kealley 2, Jamie Kealley 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 3 (Reece Kurrle 2, Leon Brown 1)
The final contest saw the Tankard Dental trio of Rohan Reimers, Paul Kealley and Jamie Kealley winning three, two and one singles respectively in a sound 8-3 victory over Choices Flooring Mildura.
Sixteen-year-old Jamie made a solid pennant one debut winning a singles as well as combining with Rohan Reimers to win the second doubles. He also took opposing number two Leon Brown to five sets before Brown took control late in the match.
For Choices Flooring Reece Kurrle played well winning two singles, however opponents Tankard Dental have shown they could be a force this season.

– Cookes Pools & Spas 8 (Ashley Morrison, David Sergi 3, Nhat Dat 1) d Mallee Meats 3 (John Fitzpatrick, Mark Cleary 1)
This season’s pennant 2 sees Riley Clemence and Nhat Dhat coming up from pennant 3, and Mark Cleary, who was a fill-in in the winter makes his debut as a number 2 in Mallee Meats. Kevin Gorman, originally from Perth and in Mildura for a family reunion, filled in for Mallee Meat’s number 3, Riley Clemence.
Cookes Pools and Spas started of the summer season strong with a decisive win over Maller Meats. First up was Cookes’s number 3 Nhat Dhat against Mallee Meat’s number 2 Mark Cleary, with Mark taking the game 11-3, 3-11, 11-2, 11-4. Cookes captain Ashley Morrison then evened the score to 1 apiece defeating number 3 Kevin Gorman in straight sets 11-7, 11-4, 11-7. Next up was Mallee Meat’s number 1 John Fitzpatrick against Cookes number 2 David Sergi. A tight contest in the first set with Fitzpatrick narrowly winning 12-10, but Sergi dominated in the next three sets winning 11-5,11-5, 11-3.
The first doubles of the night was Morrison and Sergi vs Fitzpatrick and Cleary in a solid 4 set match with the Cookes duo taking the win 11-9, 11-7, 3-11, 11-9. Morrison then surged ahead with a victory over Cleary in straight sets, 12-10, 12-10,11-9, bringing the game score to 4-1. Fitzpatrick got his first singles win for the night beating Dhat 11-7,14-12, 11-3. Gorman and Sergi then faced off, with Sergi taking his second singles match for night 8-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-4.
The score now 5-2, Cookes only needed one more rubber to win the night. The second doubles match of the night saw Fitzptrick and Gorman take on Morrison and Dhat. Mallee Meats were able to put another one on the board with a clean 3 set win over Cookes 14-12, 11-6, 11-3.
But that would be the last win for Mallee Meats, as Cookes knuckled down and took the last three games to end the night. First captain Morrison soundly defeated Fitzpatrick 11-7, 11-6, 11-8, then Sergi took his third singles win for the night beating Cleary 11-6, 11-3, 7-11, 11-9. Then in the only five set match of the night Dhat clenched a win from Gorman 10-12,11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 11-1.
Final score 8 rubbers to 3 and 25 games to 15.
– Pinnacle Packers 5 (Rasin Bhuiyan 3, Ryan Peterson 2) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Josh Arnold 2, James Jarvis 1)
A short two-versus-two competition for Pinnacle and Weightmans with both Fitzpatrick and Gujral absent. Both Josh Arnold and Rasin Bhuiyan will have their first seasons as captains after both being graded number 3’s last season. Ryan Peterson, who took out the 2024 winter season grand final win and the winter season Super 8’s win, makes his debut in pennant 2, showing great form in all three of his matches.
To begin the night, Pinnacle skipper Rasin Bhuiyan took the first win, beating James Jarvis in straight sets 11-8, 11-4, 11-9. Then in a tense five setter, Ryan Peterson came close to defeating Josh Arnold, narrowly losing the first set 10-12, then taking the second 11-9. Arnold responded by taking the third 11-8, Peterson then retaliated with a 11-9 win in the fourth but Arnold was able to seal his victory 11-6 in the fifth. A close game and a great effort from both players.
Next up in the only doubles match of the night, Bhuiyan and Peterson squared off against Arnold and Jarvis in an up-and-down five set match with Weightmans getting off to a slow start, losing the first set 11-3, but then finding their form and taking the second 11-2. Pinnacle struggled through to take the third 11-8, but Wightmans proved too good, taking the next two sets 11-5 and 11-8.
Pinnacle got their second win with Peterson soundly beating Jarvis 11-8, 11-6, 11-8. The score now at two games all, it was time for a tie-breaker. Bhuiyan took on Arnold and won in straight sets, with Arnold coming close to taking a set in the second, but to no avail, going down 11-7, 12-10, 11-6.
Final score 3 rubbers to 2 and 13 games to 6.

Welcome one and all to the first round of Summer Season of 2024. With a bunch of people from the winter pennant 3 pulling out, the previous pennant three and four had been merged to form the new Summer pennant. This could be a very interesting season.
With the new merge, team captain of Mallee Meats, Karly Leach, gets to play with her mum Jenny Leach forming a due that could be dangerous in future. Also a new addition for Sammy’s Slammers is team captain Sammy Campbell. How ironic is that? I think that was just a little bit planned … only a little.
– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Steve Pongrac, Tom Gilmour 2, Nathan Beard 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 5 (Sam Campbell, Deegan Kerslake 2)
An interesting night is ahead as Regional Taxation Services takes on Sammy’s Slammers. Many games were played but only one team can win the first match of the season (well one team per table).
The first five-setter of the night was between Tom Gilmour and Sam Campbell. Tom told Sam that he’s going to take all his games to five sets. Sam being the kind not at all mischievous, she granted this wish but only for their game. She couldn’t let her whole team give away too many sets. Despite having a bit of a rough start with an unexpected interruption, the two opponents were able to continue after a short break and have fun playing one another. But these two are interesting. They had some friendly trash talk with each player warning the other to watch out. It came down to this game and as Sam said and had expected, she won the rubber for her team 7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5.
The next five-setter match we have is the first round of doubles with Regional Taxation Services teammates, Steve Pongrac and Nathan Beard, playing Sammy’s Slammers teammates, Sam Campbell and Andrew Jeffries. After Sammy’s Slammers gains a two point lead in the second set, the comeback of Steve and Nathan was phenomenal taking the final three sets despite Sammy’s Slammers’ efforts to not give up throughout the fourth set, where Sam and Andrew took their opposition to ten each in hopes to scare Regional Taxation Services into loosing by “accident”. Final score was 8-11, 8-11, 11-6, 14-12, 11-6 to Regional Taxation Services.
Following the first set of doubles, an amazing win was witnessed as Deegan Kerslake triumphed over Steve Pongrac in only three sets. 13-11, 11-7, 11-6. A great job well done to Deegan. I’m sure Sam Campbell is happy to have you on her team.
In the second round of doubles, Steve Pongrac paired with Tom Gilmour played Sam Campbell and Deegan Kerslake. Extending their lead, Sammy’s Slammers, Sam and Deegan win the set in five sets by a thread. 11-5, 5-11, 11-7, 2-11, 14-12.
The score was 5 to 3 with Sammy’s Slammers ahead. Steve must’ve given his team some amazing pep talk because they all then flew through their last games all winning the three rubbers they needed to beat Sammy’s Slammers. Steve Pongrac and Sam Campbell in four sets (12-10, 11-8, 4-11, 11-3), Tom Gilmour and Deegan Kerslake in four sets (11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 12-10), and Nathan Beard and Andrew Jeffries in three sets (12-10, 13-11, 11-5).
Regional Taxation Services is the winner for round one. Great start of the season Steve, Tom and Nathan.
WINNER: Regional Taxation Services 6 d Sammy’s Slammers 5 Games: 22 to 19
– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Steve Parker 3, Ted Cleary 2) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Nick Kiapekos, Maria Starikov, Gary Leach 1)
The first match for the Summer season was against Conner and Maria and Exposed’s number 3 had Weightman’s number 2 a bit worried, when he came out firing to take the first set. But Maria slowly built up her wall of defense and grabbed the next three to mark up her teams first Rubber (8/11, 11/7, 11/0, 11/5).
Gary then came up against Steve and his skills were a little hard to deal with, as he was clearly the stronger player, winning in three, but Gary came away learning from the experience (11/4, 11/4, 11/7).
Ted and Nick had a ding dong battle, with the youngest player in the Pennant up against one of the Veterans. The action went to five sets, with Ted snaring the middle two and three sets going to 12. In the finish it was Nick who added a Rubber to Weightmans score (11/6, 8/11, 10/12, 12/10, 12/10).
The first Doubles saw Steve and Ted facing Nick and Maria, with another exciting five setter up for grabs. Both teams played some amazing shots with Exposed evening up the ledger to make it two Rubbers each (11/5, 5/11, 4/11, 11/8, 11/9).
With five sets the flavor of the night, Steve and Maria didn’t disappoint. With many a long rally coming from their clash, which fell in favor of Steve and Exposed (7/11, 9/11, 11/6, 11/2, 11/5).
Connor didn’t have a lot of luck against Nick in a three set match, falling to Nick, but not without some hard fought points from Connor (11/2, 11/7, 11/3).
Ted and Gary finished up the second set of Singles, with Gary pushing Ted, but not quite enough to nab a win in their three set match (11/7, 11/8, 11/9).
Although Nick and Gary were connivingly beaten in the first set of the Doubles against Steve and Connor, they turned the encounter around to reward with the Rubber and make it an even four each to go into the last three singles matches (3/11, 11/5, 11/3, 11/8).
The two number one players were now ready to fight it out for their teams. Steve came away with the first set, but Nick played well to pull the next two back. Steve was having none of that and as much as Nick battled to get the win, Steve put in a Captains knock to give Exposed the upper hand and to come away with three individual wins as well (11/7, 9/11, 7/11, 12/10, 11/9).
The next match was a bit of a surprise, as Maria doesn’t loose too many games in three sets. But Ted brought out his A game and smashed through the Brick Wall to hand Exposed the win they needed to take the sixth Rubber (11/9, 15/13, 11/5).
With the night already decided, Connor and Gary were still to play off. It was a good contest, with Connor bringing out some terrific shots and taking it to four sets, but Gary made fought hard to leave with his first win for the night (11/8, 9/11, 11/7, 11/7)
WINNERS : Exposed Signage and Apparel : 6 to Weightman’s Packaging 5.
GAMES : 23 to 21.
– Dunkley Scales 6 (Koby Grace 2, Hayden Wilson, Derek Hung 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Karly Leach 3, Curtis Crabtree 2)
First to play were Jen and Hayden, with Jen sighing in relief when she was able to snatch a set, but Hayden’s consistent game was too much for this P plater, ending the match in four (11/9, 11/7, 4/11, 11/9).
Karly experience was too much for Derek, with her tricky chops and slices, with a quick match giving Mallee the Rubber (11/5, 11/1, 11/7).
Curtis and Koby’s match was outstanding, with the Guy’s moving further from the table with every shot. Both put in some excellent shots, with three of the sets going to 12 and the final result falling to Koby (11/9, 12/10, 10/12, 6/11, 12/10).
In the first Doubles, Karly and Curtis tried their best, but Koby and Hayden put a spanner in the works for Mallee, marking up a third Rubber for Dunkley (11/7, 11/4, 11/7).
It looked like Karly was going to make short work of Hayden in their match, but both struggled with their serves at the later part of the second set, which led to a see sawing struggle to get a clear winner, with Hayden forcing it out to 17. Karly focused hard to finish in three sets (11/7, 17/15, 11/5).
If Jen thought it was hard to pinch a set from Hayden, she had no chance against Koby. With some brilliant shot making from Dunkley’s #1 (11/5, 11/2, 11/5).
The pressure was now on, as Mallee was trailing 4 to 2. Curtis and Derek had a five set tussle, with some sets being won easily and others seemingly never ending rallies. Derek was honing his shots, with slams a plenty. But Curtis kept grinding away, taking the last set to 12 to move a little closer in the Rubber count (11/2, 9/11, 3/11, 11/6, 12/10).
Mother and Daughter partnered up in the last Doubles, needing to bring home a win. And just in passing, how proud am I to call my Daughter Captain of our team. Karly and Jen put up a brave fight against Koby and Derek, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to bring home the Chockies. Koby and Derek putting Dunkley only one Rubber away from victory, in a hard fought five setter (11/6, 5/11, 11/8, 9/11, 11/7).
Mallee’s Captain, Karly put together a super game to win in three sets against Koby and give Mallee some breathing space and leaving with three individual wins as well (11/9, 11/4, 11/5).
With the last two matches still to determine the winning team. Curtis and Hayden were next to the Table and it was a great contest which went to five sets. Both had put together some very nice Table Tennis through the evening, so it proved to be a back and fourth battle. With the last two sets going to Curtis it meant both teams sat on 5 Rubbers (11/8, 8/11, 5/11, 11/8, 11/8).
It came down to the last match to see which team would walk away with the first win of the Season. Jen and Derek were to be it, but the way Derek had fine tuned his game as the night went on, Jen didn’t stand much of a chance, even if she did give him a little fright in the second. This win by Derek, gave Dunkley the Victory for the night (11/9, 14/12, 11/4).
WINNER : Dunkley Scales 6 to Mallee Meats 5.
