SUPER 8’s PENNANT 1 – winter pennant 2024
Joel Thomas is the 2024 Winter Pennant Super 8’s champion after defeating fourth seed Jackson Tung in an exciting five set final.
The concept of the Super 8’s is to reward the top eight players from the current singles aggregate in each pennant in a round robin event to determine the champion player for that particular grade. A big thank you to the coordinators, Sony Sefer and Mark Ljubic. Sony is the brainchild of this tournament and it is going from strength to strength with some excellent table tennis played again.

The number one seed was Joel Thomas, number 2 Kate Carmichael 3 Jackson Tung, 4 Wayne Carmichael , 5 Reece Kurrle , 6 Rohan Reimers , 7 Andrew Cannard and 8 Dylan Wood , the youngest player of the group. The top four players receive a double chance.
In the first round Thomas matched up against veteran Wayne Carmichael who himself had played well throughout the season. This was an entertaining three set match and despite losing 8-11 9-11 8-11 Carmichael gave it his best shot against the best player in the competition.
Fourth seed Jackson Tung started the night well defeating the second ranked Kate Carmichael 12-10 11-7 3-11 11-9 and as usual these two had many long rallies, Tung then moved to the semi final to await his next opponent.
After losing his first match Wayne Carmichael matched up against Reece Kurrle who earlier defeated number 8 seed Dylan Wood in an entertaining four set match 9-11 11-9 11-8 11-7. Carmichael and Kurrle then played one of the closest matches of the night with Carmichael surviving against the power hitting Kurrle in a great win 11-9 11-9 12-14 9-11 11-4 what a contest,
Now to one of the semifinals and it was Jackson Tung who played Wayne Carmichael and again there was some excellent table tennis, Tung dropped the first game narrowly and then proved too steady with some fine attacking play mixed with solid defence to win in four sets 10-12 11-8 11-6 11-7, Tung now moving in to the final with some confidence as he had defeated the number two and fourth seeds to make it to the big match.
Joel Thomas moved to the final proving too steady for Kate Carmichael 11-8 11-6 11-7. To get to the semi final Carmichael needed to fend off Andrew Cannard in three sets, again many long rallies took place and there were also rumblings of Carmichael having some fortune at the net on several occasions.
The final started with Thomas as hot favourite however someone forgot to tell Tung and he was off to a flyer winning the first game comfortably with some fine play, Thomas struck back to take second narrowly however Tung was proving difficult to shake off, the third saw Thomas step up a gear and win comfortably however with Tung on the attack the fourth was a beauty and it was Tung who levelled the match, spectators were now showing more interest and the final was now in to the fifth and was going point for point, late in the match Tung lined up a forehand down the line which he had played well during the match however this one caught the net and then from here Thomas pounced showing class under pressure to win an exciting final 4-11 11-9 11-3 7-11 11-8.
Joel was the deserved champion to continue his unbeaten run in 2024 however opponent Jackson was not disgraced and he had enjoyed a successful night.

All through the season the singles aggregate has been close with many players a chance to win up until late in the season when Tom Morrison kicked away to win.
Given this the Super 8‘s was considered to be a tough comp with several players a chance.

The seeds were No 1 – Tom Morrison, 2 – Jason Gifkins , 3 – Marcus Cimino, 4 – Jamie Kealley , 5 – Ash Morrison, 6 – Quentin Clark , 7 – John Fitzpatrick, 8 – Kevin Johns.
Throughout the season Jamie was the leader of the aggregate for 6 weeks while Tom took the lead for the last five rounds to win.
The first match featured Tom and Jamie, and this was an excellent four set contest with Jamie taking the points to win 7-11 11-6 12 11-8 a close tussle.
The match up of the second and third seed saw Marcus defeat Jason 3-11 11-9 12-10 11-5, well played Marcus.
In the knockout matches fifth seed Ash Morrison defeated 8th seed Kevin Johns in a marathon, the longest match of the night 11-13 10-12 11-8 11-8 11-9 what a comeback from Ash against a tough opponent who never gives up, an amazing effort from the 80-year-old Kev.
Seventh seed John Fitzpatrick has been in excellent form in the second part of the season and he proved too strong for the Quentin Clark the sixth seed , John won 11-5 11-6 14-12.
The semifinals featured father and son Ash and Tom Morrison, and the number one seed was too mobile for his dad Ash winning 11-6 11-8 14-12 in the family challenge.
The other semi saw second seed Jason staying alive by defeating John in four sets, Jason dropped the first but was too steady in the remainder of the match.
In the match to decide seventh and eight Quentin outlasted Kevin winning 11-7 11-8 8-11 12-10, as usual Kev was never going to give up and made Quentin earn the win.
Now to the Preliminary matches with the winners to play off in the final:
Jamie Kealley’s form was looking ominous, he matched up against the hard working and difficult opponent Jason, Jamie flew through the first game before Jason fought back in the second but to no avail with Jamie winning in three, 11-1 12-10 11-6 and advancing to the final.
In the other prelim it was obvious Tom wanted another crack at Jamie and he proved too steady for Marcus winning 11-4 11-8 11-8.
Bring on the final:
Jamie started this match well and grabbed the first game before Tom then took control of a major portion of the final winning the next two games and taking a 7-4 lead in the fourth, Jamie looked to be on the ropes however looks can be deceiving and he steadied in the fourth, clawed his way back to narrowly take the fourth after winning seven of the last nine points. What a final this proved to be and the last game went point for point until at eleven all Jamie broke free to take the match 11-8 ,5-11 9-11 11-9 13-11 an outstanding match from two of our emerging youngsters.

Mother and son played off against each other. Marita Grace showed love but not mercy to Koby Grace as she continued to overpower him time and time again. 11-4, 11-1, 11-3, no mercy from Mum …
Weightmans Packaging teammates Ryan Peterson and Karly Leach got to have a shot at each other in some friendly competition and great rallies. That friendliness however, dramatically changed in their final set as Ryan unleashed his special moves on Karly winning 11-0.
In the Semi Finals Exposed Signage/Apparel teammates Marita Grace and Nick Kiapekos also played each other for a spot in the Preliminary Finals. They both had some laughs at some not-so-great points and silly faults, remembering to have fun because that’s what table tennis is all about. Even though there were multiple faults by both Marita and Nick, they had some great rallies and showed great sportsmanship as they congratulated each other on their points. Despite showing that team chemistry these two have, Marita still showed Nick that she meant business and even though Nick was her teammate, she wasn’t going to slow up for him. She took him down in four sets 11-6, 6-11, 11-4, 11-7.
Aggregate leader James Jarvis has his fingers crossed as he had to play Ryan Peterson in the Grand Final hoping that he can finally beat him for the first time this season. Giving it his absolute best, James could not triumph over Ryan despite having a very close first set of 15-13. Ryan than continued to win the next two sets taking the title of Pennant 3 Super 8’s Champion 15-13 11-7, 11-6.

SUPER 8’s PENNANT 4 – winter pennant 2024
Super 8’s is a great way to finish off the Winter Season and all involved had a great night and although there is always only one Winner, everyone put in their best effort in an attempt to make it as far up the Ladder as possible. The players lucky enough to have kept the consistency in their game and be placed in the top eight are as follows.
1 – Maria Starikov 2 – Tom Gilmour, 3 – Deegan Kerslake , 4 – Curtis Crabtree 5 – Gary Leach, 6 – Jenny Leach , 7 – Raj Gujral, 8 – Ildi Healy. As Ildi was not available and Nathan Beard who was next in line, was not well, Derek Hung stepped into the 8th position.

The first couple of matches were between the top four and Maria was up against Curtis, with both giving it their utmost, which led to some very tight sets. Maria pushed it out to five sets, but Curtis found a way to get around Maria’s defense and marked up his first win. (11/7, 5/11, 5/11,12/10,17/15).
Next up was Tom and Deegan, which was also a terrific battle, with Deegan upping his game to grab the third set, but Tom came back in the fourth, in a determined fight to get through to the Preliminary Final. (11/8, 11/6, 5/11, 12/10).
Gary had to face up to Derek in the next match and it was the focused Derek who came away with the win, after Gary put in a good fight in the first set, but it wasn’t quite enough to get over the line. (12/10, 11/8, 11/7).
Raj has probably been the one player in Pennant four who has showed the most improvement in his game and Jen knew she would need a lot to fall her way to come out in front. There were some moments when things got close, but Raj pulled out his tricky serves to put an end to the match in three sets (11/9, 12/10, 11/8).
It now came down to those clever players who made it through to the Semi Finals. First to step up were Maria and Derek and all would have been thinking Maria being number one, would have had an easy run, but Derek can be very difficult to beat at times and this was one of those times. With this win Derek entered the Pre Lim’s (11/8, 11/6, 13/11).
Raj and Deegan practice together most weeks and know each others games inside out, so this was going to be a ripper of a match. Raj had a super start to win the first two sets, with Deegan putting in an mighty fight back to take the next three sets, with some amazing shots coming out (10/12, 4/11, 12/10, 11/6, 11/7).
Then out came the big guns, with Curtis facing Deegan this was bound to be an exciting match. Both were showing some real fire in their games and were not ready to give up easily. Curtis seemed to have control of the match, reeling in the first two sets with ease, but Deegan wrestled his was back in the third. With a lot of determination from Curtis, he made sure of his spot in the Finals, ending the match in four sets (11/6, 11/3, 10/12, 12/10).
Tom and Derek have a very similar game style, with their constant cutting, slicing and chopping, which could have made for a real challenge for both. But it was Tom who got the better of Derek, with some long games, but seemingly easy wins, to allow him to slot into the Finals (11/7, 11/4, 11/6).
The play off for the wrong end of the Ladder was next on the list and as it turned out, it was a Family affair, with Gary playing Jen. It was a awesome match, with countless rallies. The first set went to Jen, the second a full on tussle, with Gary smashing out some great winners. The final two sets were fought in friendly rivalry, which fell the way of Jen, in some close encounters (11/4, 11/13, 11/6, 11/9).
The first set of the Final saw an excellent come back from Tom, with Curtis having the game within one point to a win, sitting on a 10 to 4 lead and Tom somehow pulled that back to 10 all and finally a 12 / 10 win. The second set was a definite sway back to Curtis, with a convincing win of 11/2. Tom’s never say die attitude, enabled him to pull himself back into it with an 11/6 win. The fourth and final set was a beauty, with both giving it red hot go. The Winner of the 2024 Pennant four, Super 8’s Championships is Tom Gilmour.
