After a short break following the completion of the recent winter competition the Sunraysia Table Tennis Association have commenced their 10-round summer pennant.

This is always an exciting time as new teams are selected giving the opportunity for players to advance grades. – Weightmans Packaging 7 (Jamie Kealley, Rohan Reimers, Marcus Cimino 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3)

Despite this being the first round of play there was some excellent table tennis played with two matches decided by the barest margin of 6-5 indicating the closeness of the teams. The third scoreline was a 7-4 victory by Weightmans Packaging over Cookes Pools & Spas despite Arhuang Lau winning three singles for Cookes.  In an even display the Weightmans trio of Jamie Kealley, Rohan Reimers and Marcus Cimino all won two singles each.

Cimino proved to be a matchwinner, in the first match of the night he accounted for pennant one regular Russell Walder in a close fought five set tussle winning 2-11 11-8 11-8 5-11 11-8 a slow start but then a good fightback. In the final match of the night Cimino then scored a good win over Jason Gifkins who had won the singles aggregate in pennant two in the recently completed winter pennant.

An excellent match for the spectators was the singles between the talented Lau and 17-year-old Jamie Keally. Lau was able to win in four close sets but not before there was an excellent display of power hitting from both players.

– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Jackson Tung, Liam Wood, Ashley Morrison 2) d Tankard Dental 5 (Reece Kurrle 3)

Despite Tankard Dental skipper Reece Kurrle doing all he could to grab the four points it was not to be against Choices Flooring Mildura who won the final two matches winning 6-5 in a good start to the season. Choices’ Jackson Tung, Liam Wood and teammate

Ashley Morrison all won two singles each to secure the win. Amazingly Tankard’s Kurrle was able to win three singles and take part in both doubles victories however his team came up one rubber short.

Kurrle’s match against opposing skipper Jackson Tung was a highlight and went to five sets as seems to be the case each time these two meet. Kurrle grabbed the first two games before Tung fought back to level, in the fifth Kurrle lifted and was able to maintain the ascendancy for a solid win.

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Mark Dorman, Paul Kealley 2, Quentin Clark 1) d Mallee Bearings 5 (Kate Carmichael 3, Lee Leeson 1)

The final contest was potentially decided in the first singles when Regional Taxation Services number three Quentin Clark proved too good for Mallee Bearings number two Tom Morrison in three impressive sets. Clark possesses a fast-attacking game and justified his promotion from pennant two with this victory.

The 6-5 win went the way of Regional Taxation Services over Mallee Bearings despite Kate Carmichael winning three singles for the Bearings team. Clark’s teammates, lefties Mark Dorman and Paul Kealley both won two singles as well as combining to win the important first doubles. RTS grabbed the ascendancy early taking a 4-1 lead and later 5-2 before Mallee Bearings mounted a comeback however it wasn’t to be.

In exciting news for local table tennis, last week Table Tennis Victoria announced that Kate Carmichael had been selected for Victoria to play in the National Veterans Championships to be held in Brisbane in October. Carmichael will play in the Ladies Over 30’s teams and individual events in the week-long event.

Weightman’s Packaging 6 Rasin Bhuiyan (3), Michael Tan (2), Steve Parker (0) defeated Pinnacle Packers 5 Josh Arnold (1), James Jarvis (2), Ryan Hensgen (1).

Weightmans defeated Pinnacle Packers by the skin of their teeth in the opening round of the 2025 summer season wherein the final games score was a tight 21 to 21. Both Josh Arnold and Rasin Bhuiyan have returned to captaining duties after being absent last season and both have shown good form. Steve Parker makes his Pennant 2 debut as a No. 3 on Weightman’s side while gun player Michael Tan has moved up from a No. 3 to a No. 2 position since last season.

Tan took the first scalp of the season by defeating Hensgen in a long five-setter 8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4. Then captain Arnold got his team’s first rubber by besting Parker in another gruelling five-set match. Parker took the first two sets 11-5, 13-11 but Arnold stood his ground and fought his way back, winning the next three in a row 11-9, 11-5, 11-4. Next, teammate Jarvis looked good to topple Bhuiyan in their match, winning the first two sets 11-9, 11-7 but he let it slip in the next three, losing 6-11, 5-11, 9-11. Packers then levelled the game score 2-2 with a win in the first doubles, dropping the first set 7-11, but recovering well to win 11-8, 11-5, 11-6.

Tan then showed he hasn’t lost any of his momentum from last season by downing Arnold in another five-setter. Arnold took the first set 11-8, Tan the second 14-12, Arnold then won the third 11-9 but Tan powered through to win the last two 11-7, 13-11.

Bhuiyan then cleaned up Hensgen in three sets 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 while Jarvis got his first win for the night by besting Parker also in three 11-3, 11-8, 11-7. In the second doubles Weightmans had little trouble with Packers and took the win in straight sets 11-8, 11-9, 11-6, bringing the score to 5-3.

They then sealed the win with Bhuiyan defeating Arnold in three sets 11-3, 12-10, 11-9. Despite this, Packers managed to make it a respectable loss by winning the next two rubbers: Jarvis taking out Tan in three 11-6, 11-8, 11-7 and then Hensgen besting Parker again in straight sets 13-11, 11-9, 11-8.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 21 games to 21.

Mallee Meats 6 Harry Gujral (2), Therese Fitzpatrick (2), Peter Fitzpatrick (1) defeated Cookes Pools & Spas 5 Duy Truong (3), David Sergi (1), Deegan Kerslake (0).

In his debut as a No. 1 Harry Gujral led his team to a hard-fought win in the first round of the 2025 summer season. Despite losing, Cookes Pools & Spas could prove to be a tough side going forward with winter premiership winner Duy Truong as captain and former Pennant 3 top player Deegan Kerslake filling the No. 3 position. This season also sees the return of David Sergi as a No. 2 on Cookes’ side and a father and daughter team-up of Peter and Therese Fitzpatrick on Meats’s.

Truong took the first win confidently by downing Therese Fitzpatrick in straight sets 11-4, 11-6, 14-12. Then father Peter had a good scrap against Sergi, the latter winning the first 11-8, Fitzpatrick biting back and taking the next two 11-7, 11-9, but Sergi proved too strong and won the last two sets 13-11, 13-11. Next Gujral soundly defeated young Kerslake in straight sets 11-4, 11-9, 11-6; the game score now 2-1.

Cookes and Meats then went head-to-head in the first doubles match wherein Cookes took the first two sets 11-8, 11-4, Meats then pushed them back in the third and fourth 11-6, 11-9 but Cookes stood firm in the fifth and won 11-5.

Therese Fitzpatrick won her first singles for the night, defeating Sergi in straight sets 11-6, 11-9, 11-6 while Truong picked up his second singles by taking out Gujral in four 11-5, 11-6, 4-11, 11-7. Kerslake then went up against Peter Fitzpatrick but went down in three sets 10-12, 6-11, 7-11. Cookes and Meats then returned to battle it out in the second doubles with Cookes getting the jump on Meats, taking the first two sets 11-5, 11-8. They looked poised to win but Meats halted their advance, clawing their way back to win 11-8, 11-6, 11-8, bringing the score to 4-4.

Gujral obtained his side’s fifth rubber easily with a win over Sergi, 11-3, 11-4, 11-8 and then teammate Therese Fitzpatrick faced off against Kerslake. He took the first set 11-7 but failed to make any in-roads in the next three sets, going down 10-12, 11-7, 11-6, giving Meats the win at 6 rubbers to 4. In the last, Truong nabbed his third singles by defeating Peter Fitzpatrick 11-1, 11-6, 11-5.

Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 23 games to 18.

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 6 (Steve Pongrac, Chris Pongrac 2, Curtis Crabtree 1) d Mallee Meats 5 (Brenden Johnson, Raj Gujral 2)

Of the six players taking part in this round one match three were fill-ins. Both skippers were out, and Mallee Meats Sabrina Fitzpatrick was replaced by Raj Gujral who was looking for some practice for the upcoming secondary schools table tennis day to be held at our stadium on September 9th. This day is overseen by our Mark Ljubic and puts the spotlight on table tennis for a day by the local schools.

The Exposed team also were without new player Mark Peters who injured his shoulder at the last grading session, and he is now out for the season. This is a blow as Mark looked to be a very good players who was returning after a long break from the game,

he was replaced by Steve Pongrac who last played in the summer pennant of 2024. Welcome back Steve. Exposed number two Nick Kiapekos was also out for this round as he had an appointment with Dane Swan, go Pies! Nick was replaced by Steve’s son Chris Pongrac who last played in the STTA in 2002. How appropriate that the father and son combination teamed up with Father’s Day pending.

Now to the table tennis, what a match this turned out to be, a thriller with Exposed Signage/Apparel taking the points 6-5 over maybe an unlucky Mallee Meats. There was some excellent table tennis played and all up five five set matches were fought out. The Exposed trio of Steve, Chris and Curtis were fast starters taking a three-nil lead, Curtis Crabtree was making his debut in Pennant Three which was well deserved given his form in Pennant Four where he won the Super 8’s title and then lead his team to a premiership.

Curtis was first up in this match and accounted for Hayden Wilson in four sets while teammate Chris Pongrac who lined up against the dangerous Brenden Johnson. Despite the long break from the game Chris was very impressive winning in another four setter. The next match was a beauty wen Meats Steve Pongarc outlasted his much younger opponent Raj winning in a five set nailbiter 5-11 11-5 10-12 11-8 12-10 a good fightback after trailing one game to two.

Mallee Meats were up against it and then struck back twice, the first doubles featured Brenden and Hayden up against Steve and Curtis, Mallee Meats were now on the board as Brenden and Hayden won in straight sets. Brenden then reduced the deficit to 2-3 when he won a four setter against Curtis, amazingly the difference in each game was the barest margin of two points, a great tussle 14-12 9-11 11-9 11-9 Brenden’s way.

Steve pushed the lead out to 4-2 when his experience got him over the line in straight sets against the hard-working Hayden however Raj then defeated Curtis in an amazing five set struggle. Raj came up with the “W” despite Curtis scoring eleven in four of the five games.

Raj won the first two games 13-11 13-11 and then struggles losing the third and fourth 1-11 7-11 in a great comeback by Curtis, Raj was able to lift in the fifth and impressively took the fifth 11-7, Mallee Meats now trailed 3-4 going into the second doubles.

This doubles was a ripper, the father and son combination of Steve and Chris Pongrac matched up against Brenden Johnson and Raj and what a match this was, the Mallee Meats pair of Brenden and Raj narrowly took the first and the second before Steve and Chris bounced back in fine style. After many long rallies the Pongrac’s prevailed taking the match 11-13 8-11 12-10 11-8 11-8. The Exposed team now took a 5-3 lead, however Mallee Meats courtesy of Brenden and Raj in the next two singles scoring two wins to level the match. With some big forehands

Brenden accounted for Steve in four sets, another good match, Raj then matched up against Curtis in a tremendous match, Raj won the first two games narrowly and then Curtis struck back to level at two rubbers all, in an amazing finish Rak held his nerve to win 11-9 11-9 9-11 6-11 12-10, a thriller.

With the scores at five rubbers all Exposed fill in Chris Pongrac took to the table against Hayden Wilson and for the fifth time teammates witnessed a five-set marathon. Hayden grabbed the first game however Chris played well to win the next two, Hayden took the fourth narrowly and the tension was growing. Chris grabbed the early ascendancy and held on to win a hard-fought match 9-11 11-9 11-4 8-11 11-7.

There had been four five set matches in the last five games, indicating how close this contest had been. For Exposed Signage/Apparel Steve and Chris had won two singles while Curtis won one. Both Brenden and Raj won to singles each for Mallee Meats, the doubles were shared.

– Sammy’s Slammers 6 (Sam Campbell 3, Koby Grace 2) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Karly Leach 2, Leo Parker, Cooper Kalms 1)

This was another close encounter between two even teams.

The Regional Taxation Services team is made up of skipper, the reliable, Karly Leach a long time STTA member while the number two is the up-and-coming Leo Parker. Their third player is Cooper Kalms playing his first senior pennant. Cooper is not a stranger to the STTA as he played in the then strong junior pennant approximately 10 years ago. Welcome back Connor!!

Their opponents the Sammy’s Slammers trio is Samantha Campbell who is the captain, Sam commenced playing last year and has improved markedly, she possesses a big forehand and should have a big season. The number two is Koby Grace who is a youngster on the rise.

Their number three is Leanne Wilson, the aggregate winner from the Pennant Four winter pennant who deserves her promotion after only commencing competition table tennis this year.

To the table tennis, this was a topsy turvy match with Regional Taxation Services taking a four – three lead at one stage only for the Slammers to fight back and win three rubbers in succession to bank the four points. For the victors skipper Sam played well to win three singles. She did not have it all her own way and won each in four sets. Teammate Koby Grace played a key role in the win by winning two four setters, his match against Leo Parker was a good win and enabled his team to grab the victory. Whilst teammate Leanne Wilson did not win a singles she played an important role when she teamed up with Sam to win the best match of the night in the second doubles against Karly and Cooper. This was a lengthy match and controlled by either side over the first four games before Sam and Leanne broke away in the fifth to win 7-11 11-8 11-4 8-11 11-3.

These two teams are evenly balanced. For Regional Taxation Services Karly Leach won two singles while Leo and Cooper won one each.

– Mallee Meats 6 (Yen Hwak 3, Nathan Beard 1) d Tankard Dental 5 (Maria Starikov, Ildi Healy 2, Andrew Jeffries 1)

Mallee : Yen Hwak, Nathan Beard and Conner Burnett. Tankard : Maria Starikov, Ildi Healy and Andrew Jeffries.

First to face up on the night were Nathan and Maria and it would have been thought, this would go to its normal five games, but Maria turned up the heat right from the on set and unsettled Nathan, to snare the first Rubber for Mallee (11/3, 11/9, 11/8).

Yen was promoted to Pennant 3 over the Winter Season, but must have found the battle a little difficult and has come back to visit Pennant four. He will have picked up some valuable moves.  Ildi was drawn to play him and with her experience, she pushed the match all the way, with some excellent placement shots, but wasn’t able to pull in the win, notching up Yen’s first win (11/9, 5/11, 14/16, 11/7, 11/6).

The improvement in Conners game is very noticeable, but Andrew played a very fine game, which after some close points, landed Tankard their second Rubber, in a long five game bout (9/11, 11/5, 11/9, 10/12, 12/10).

The Doubles saw many rallies when Yen and Nathan, came up against Maria and Ildi, with the match falling to Mallee (11/7, 11/4, 11/9).

With the scores evenly balanced the two number one’s were ready for the contest. Maria with her ability to keep getting the ball back and Yen with his super quick returns. Maria tried hard, but Yen had all the answers (11/9, 11/8, 11/6).

Nathan was in focus mode and didn’t take long to get the win over Andrew to put Mallee two Rubbers up (11/4, 11/6, 11/4).

Ildi and Conner fought it out over four games with Conner grabbing the first and Ildi pulling her game together, to take the next three, giving her the set and Tankard some breathing space (8/11, 11/7, 14/12, 11/5).

Tankard were unable to spark up in the second Doubles and went down in three to Yen and Conner (11/6, 11/6, 11/2).

Mallee only needed one more Rubber to give them the win needed to take the points and with their number one, Yen, up against Tankards number three, the writing was on the wall. A good effort from Andrew, but Yen had control of the match (11/8, 11/5, 11/5).

Mallee now held the six Rubbers and the nights win. The Tables turned in the next, match, as Maria put up a good defense to win over Conner (11/6, 11/8, 11/5).

Nathan worked hard to find another win, with three very tight games, but Ildi was the more consistent and wore Nathan down in the finish (11/7, 12/10, 12/10).

WINNER : Mallee Meats – 6  to Tankard Dental  5.

GAMES : 21  to  17.

– Dunkley Scales 6 (Glenn Leeson 2, Jakob Grzan, Jenny Leach 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Tom Gilmour 3, Eddy Parker 2)

Dunkley : Glenn Leeson, Jenny Leach and Jakob Grzan. Weightman’s : Tom Gilmour Eddy Parker and Liam Milton.

In the opening match of Singles Jen was drawn to play Eddy, who won the most improved in the Winter Season and although the games were close, Eddy worked his magic to a win, in three (11/7, 11/9, 11/8).

The new member in Pennant four, Laim, faced Dunkley’s number three, Jakob and they ended up being very evenly matched. Jakob pocketed the first two, with Liam making his presence know in the third and fourth. But with Jakob having that extra skill level, due to his growth over the Winter season, was able to sneak the fifth for a win (11/6, 11/9, 9/11, 3/11, 11/5).

Glenn and Tom had to fight it out next and while it was completed in three games, the 2nd game was a doozey, going out to 20/18, nearly running out of numbers on the Score board. Tom seized the Rubber to put Weightman’s one up (11/7, 20/18, 11/9).

The Doubles, which can play an important role in the end result, ended up going the full distance, with three of the games getting to 12/10. Glenn and Jen met Tom and Eddy and both pairs were determined to collected the win. The match was a ripper, see-sawed the whole way, with Dunkley finding a way to capture the Rubber (12/10, 7/11, 12/10, 4/11, 12/10).

Weightman’s held the lead after the next two Singles, with Eddy being forced to four games, before winning against Jakob and marking his 2nd win for the night (11/3, 11/8, 9/11, 7/11). Jen gave it her all, in the match against Tom, nearly breaking through in the first game, but Tom brought out his spinning skills to pull in another win.

Liam had a valiant effort against Glenn and shows some promise, stealing the second game, with experience winning over in the finish and Glenn bringing home a much needed Rubber for Dunkley (11/8, 8/11, 11/6, 11/5).

The final score may just hinge in this second Doubles, as Dunkley couldn’t afford to lose another Rubber. Both teams laid down some fantastic shots and rallied long and hard with Dunkley’s Glenn and Jakob getting their game in sync in the last, to sneak home, against Tom and Liam. This brought the Rubbers back to square.

With three matches to play and both teams focused on getting to six first, Tom played a consistent game against Jakob, who showed his skills and stole the second game. But Tom’s know-how gave him his third Singles win and put Weightman’s in a good position (11/2, 11/13, 11/6, 11/3).

Glenn and Eddy were to wrangle it out next, with a must win needed for Dunkley. Glenn used his experience, playing some amazing shots, to come away with the win and once again, the scores came back to even (11/6, 11/3, 11/5).

It was to come down to the last match, which was between Jen and Liam and with the pressure on both hoped they could get into the zone. Liam executed some terrific shots and took control in the second game, but the determination of Jen landed Dunkley with the winning Rubber (11/8, 5/11, 11/8, 11/7).

A closely fought encounter by both Teams.
