The two doubles matches are important in the battle for four points and both Mallee Bearings and Tankard Dental, who occupy first and second on the ladder, are undefeated in doubles play over the two rounds.

– Mallee Bearings 7 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3, Mark Dorman 2) d Cookes Pools & Spas 4 (Jackson Tung 2, Paul Kealley, Russell Walder 1)

Mallee Bearings with their second victory are looking solid and their trio of Lau, Mark Dorman and Tom Morrison proved too steady for Cookes Pools & Spas who tried hard in their 7-4 defeat. The only five set singles was the first of the night when Cookes Russell Walder surprised the consistent Mark Dorman to take a two games to one lead before Dorman lifted his game to win 11-4 9-11 9-11 11-1 11-4 in very humid conditions.

Two tight doubles matches took place however Mallee Bearings were in front at the right time in each. The two captains Bearings’ Lau and Cookes Jackson Tung played an outstanding singles with some solid defence but it was the looping top spin forehands from both players which stood out.

For the victors Lau won three singles while Dorman won two. Jackson Tung for Cookes won two singles but lack of success in the doubles was costly.

– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Matt Ljubic, Jamie Kealley 2, Thanh Nguyen 1) d Choices Flooring Mildura 5 (Wayne Carmichael 3,Liam Wood 1)

Regional Taxation Services in an even team display recorded their first win of the season, narrowly defeating Choices Flooring Mildura 6-5. In an even team performance, the RTS trio of Matt Ljubic, Jamie Kealley and Thanh Nguyen won two, two and one singles respectively.

Wayne Carmichael for Choices continued his undefeated run winning three singles and his match against Matt Ljubic was top class with Carmichael holding sway narrowly in each set winning 12-10 11-9 11-9 a very close tussle. Carmichael combined with Liam Wood, who won one singles, to win the first doubles in straight sets but it was the second doubles when Ljubic combined with youngster Jamie Kealley to defeat Carmichael and Daniel Jansen which proved important in RTS gaining the four points. The final scoreline 7-11 12-10 14-12 9-11 11-5.

At five rubbers all Jamie Kealley outlasted Liam Wood to win in a tight four setter to enable his team to grab the four points. By winning two singles and taking part in a successful doubles the RTS number three Kealley was the player of the match.

– Tankard Dental 7 (Kate Carmichael 3, Rohan Reimers, Ed Hung 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Shannon Bowen, Reece Kurrle 2)

Tankard Dental won their second match of the season 7-4 over Weightmans Packaging. Tankards Kate Carmichael showed excellent form winning three singles including a four set victory over the talented Shannon Bowen. Carmichael also participated in both doubles victories to cap off a good night.

Her teammates Rohan Reimers and Eddie Hung won a singles each to enable their team to remain undefeated and second on the ladder.

For Weightmans Packaging. Bowen and Reece Kurrle won two singles each.

Mallee Meats 8 Jason Gifkins (3), Harry Gujral (3), James Jarvis (1) defeated Pinnacle Packers 3 Marcus (1), Peter Midgely (1), Peter Fitzpatrick (0).

Mallee Meats retained their round 1 momentum with another win this round over Pinnacle Packers. Meats’ captain Gifkins solidified his place at the top of the aggregate with three singles wins and teammate Gujral who lost all his singles in the first round, did his bit by winning all his singles this week.

First up, Midgely defeated Jarvis in straight sets, 12-10, 11-9, 11-2. Teammate Fitzpatrick then went up against Gifkins but could do little against him, going down in three 6-11, 7-11, 8-11. Then, in what was an upset match for Packers, skipper Cimino went down in straight sets to Gujral, 9-11, 7-11, 5-11. Packers then levelled the score 2 rubbers apiece in the first doubles winning in four 11-9, 12-10, 10-12, 11-6.

Gifkins snatched his second singles victory over Midgely in straight sets 11-6, 11-7, 11-7, and then Cimino got his only singles win for the night, besting Jarvis also in three 11-5, 11-8, 11-7. Gujral then went up against Fitzpatrick and after a close second set took the win again in three sets, 11-4, 12-10, 11-9. The score now sitting at 3-4 Meats’ way, now was the time for Packers to strike back, but it was an up-hill battle that they couldn’t win with Meats standing firm and taking the next four rubbers in a row. In the second doubles match the duo of Gifkins and Jarvis beat back the attack of Cimino and Fitzpatrick, winning in four 6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-3, onto the clash of the No. 1’s, wherein Gifkins made short work of Cimino, taking the win in three sets, 12-10, 11-5, 11-8.

Gujral then took his third win for the night with a win over Midgely, 3-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 and Jarvis marked down that eighth rubber in three sets, beating Fitzpatrick 11-6, 11-6, 11-6.

Final score 8 rubbers to 3 and 25 games to 11.

Choices Flooring Mildura 7 Ashley Morrison (2), Terry Martin (1), Andrew Jones (2) defeated Cookes Pools & Spas 4 Quentin Clark (2), Duy Truong (2), Michael Hensgen (0).

After having the bye in the first round, Cookes Pools & Spas came up against Choices Flooring who after winning in round 1 got themselves a second win with clean victory over Cookes.

In the opening rubber, Jones went down to Truong in straight sets 3-11, 9-11, 4-11, then teammate Morrison levelled the score 1-1 with a win over Hensgen, 11-6, 11-5, 10-12, 11-6. Cookes skipper Clark then swiftly dispatched Martin in three 11-7, 11-8, 11-5. The first doubles match was closely contested, with neither side giving an inch; Choices Flooring took the first 11-8, Cookes snatched the second 6-11, Choices Flooring then gained the third 14-12, then back to Cookes in the fourth 9-11 but Choices Flooring got over the line first in the fifth, 11-7.

Morrison then got his second singles win for the evening, defeating Truong in four 14-12, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9. Jones then went up against Clark and as Jones sometimes does, got under the Cookes captain’s skin, with Clark going down after just three sets 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. Martin then took out Hensgen in straight sets 11-8, 11-3, 14-12 bringing the score to 5-2 in Choices Flooring’s favour, only needing one more rubber to win the night. And they got it in the second doubles, the duo of Morrison and Jones not holding back against Clark and Hensgen for a three-set win, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7.

Despite losing the night, Cookes marked down a few more rubber for their side in the remaining three rubbers. Clark secured his second singles win, besting Morrison after a taunt four-set match, 13-11, 13-15, 11-8, 11-5 and Truong got his second win as well with a victory over Martin again in four 9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 12-10. The last rubber was an easy one for Choices Flooring with Hensgen unfortunately forfeiting his match against Jones.

Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 20 games to 16.

Its only early but Nhat Dat remains undefeated in singles with six wins while Karly Leach, Deegan Kerslake and Steve Parker trail Dat by one.

Bring on round three !!!

– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Nhat Dat 3, Steve Parker 2, Leo Parker 1) d Regional Taxation Services 4 (Sabrina Fitzpatrick 2, Sam Campbell 1)

On paper these sides were evenly matched however Regional Taxation Services took control early to lead 3-1 and then later 4-2 and maybe they weren’t evenly matched

This lead came about with number one Sabrina Fitzpatrick winning her first two singles, the first a tough four set match against Steve Parker 11-13 11-8 11-4 11-9 a match with many long rallies.

In her second singles Sabrina matched up against another Parker, this time Leo and another four-set struggle would eventuate. On his return to table tennis Leo is showing good form however Sabrina prevailed 12-10 9-11 11-7 11-9.

The first doubles featured Sabrina and partner Sam Campbell matching up against Nhat Dat and Leo and the girls played well to win 11-8 11-5 11-6.

Earlier Sam Campbell had won the first match for RTS to get them off to a good start, her opponent Leo had put up a good fight however Sam took the points 11-6 10-12 12-10 11-7.

Weightmans Packaging as mentioned earlier trailed 2- 4 and under pressure, however from this point the match turned around. Steve Parker accounted for RTS number three Hayden Wilson in straight sets to improve the score.

Steve then combined with skipper Nhat Dat in the second doubles to defeat Sam Campbell and Hayden who tried their best however their opponents proved too consistent. The scores were now four rubbers all and the match up for grabs however in the heat Weightmans Packaging would flick the switch and win the last block of three singles.

The match between Nhat and Sabrina was a hard-fought affair and as usual in matches involving Sabrina there were many long rallies however Nhat was able to land a few clever forehands and went on to win 8-11 11-9 13-11 11-7 a great match.

“Steady” Steve Parker then took to the table against Sam and they would play the sixth four setter for the night and again team mates witnessed a real struggle but it was Steve who was able to take the points 11-8 11-7 12-14 11-7 , in doing so Steve locked in the four points for Weightmans in what had been a great comeback.

The final match of the night was the best of the night when Weightmans Leo Parker matched up against Hayden Wilson. This was an amazing match between the two number threes with all the games close.

Even though the four points had gone Hayden was not going to give up without a fight and this match went on and on as others were packing up tables. Their teammates had witnessed a top match, and it was Leo who held on to win 9-11 11-8 9-11 11-7 12-10 a good recovery after being down two games to one.

In an even team performance Nhat Dat, Steve Paker and Leo Parker won three, two and one singles respectively. In a strong finish they had recovered to win the last five rubbers after they had trailed 2-4.

RTS were not disgraced, and it will be interesting when they next meet. Sabrina won two singles while Sam had success in one.

Winner – Weightmans Packaging 7 d Regional Taxation Services 4

Games – 24 to 17

– Exposed Signage/Apparel 9 (Karly Leach, Deegan Kerslake 3, Brendon Johnson 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 2 (Ryan Hensgen, Koby Grace 1)

Exposed Signage/Apparel have taken first position on the ladder by the narrowest percentage margin after winning their second match of the season.

Sammy’s Slammers have not hit their straps as yet but were not disgraced. Things looked encouraging early when Slammers number two Koby Grace defeated Brendon Johnson in four sets however from here Exposed Signage/Apparel won the next four matches.

Three of these matches involved Karly Leach the ES&A number one who was stung into action after a rare singles loss last week. In her first singles Karly defeated Yen in straight sets and later again won in three over Koby who played well to keep the pressure on.

Karly teamed up with Deegan Kerslake in the first doubles to defeat Ryan Hensgen and Koby 11-4 11-7 13-11. In their singles clash Deegan outlasted Ryan in three sets the second an amazing scoreline of 19-17 in Deegan’s favour.

Sammy’s Slammers needed to slow the deficit, and Ryan Hensgen was able to defeat opposing number three Brendon Johnson……. just. This was a long, long match and eventually Ryan took the match 6-11 11-8 11-6 9-11 11-9, both players earning a cold drink.

From here Exposed Signage/Apparel would kick on to win the remaining matches and take a 9-2 victory. Whilst the scoreline looked one sided two late five setters went the way of ES&A despite their opponents having the edge in both early. In the first Ryan took a two games to love lead playing well against Karly however she was able to recover and go on to win 4-11 8-11 11-3 11-7 11-7 an excellent comeback.

In the final game of the night Exposed’s Brendon Johnson trailed Yen one game to two however he was able to claim the fourth 11-9 and go on to win in five in a good comeback.

For Exposed Signage/Apparel both Karly Leach and young gun Deegan Kerslake won three singles each, Karly also took part in both doubles victories. Teammate Brendon Johnson chipped in with one singles victory.

For Sammy’s Slammers everyone tried hard with Ryan Hensgen and Koby Grace winning one singles each.

Tankard Dental, Captained by Leanne Wilson, were missing their number two player and needed to draw on fill in’s from other teams, but still managed to come away with a very nice win, placing them on top early in the season.

Tankard Dental : Leanne Wilson, Ildi Healy (Replaced by – Gary Leach, Connor Burnett and Nathan Beard) and Jakob Grzan. Played Dunkley Scales : Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach and Jake Hines.

– Tankard Dental 8 (Leanne Wilson 3, Nathan Beard, Jakob Grzan, Conner Burnett 1) d Dunkley Scales 3 (Maria Starikov 2, Jenny Leach 1)

After the first set of Singles things didn’t look too bad for Dunkley, with Jen coming away with a three set win over Jakob, after he pushed her to 15 in the second(11/2, 15/13, 11/5). Leanne had a very comfortable win against Jake (11/2, 11/4, 11/3), then Gary came up against Maria, which fell in favor of Dunkley after three sets(11/9, 11/7, 11/6).

The first Doubles saw Leanne and Gary fall two sets behind, when they battled it out against Maria and Jen, but had a fantastic come back, winning the last three sets with ease gave Tankard the Rubber (6/11, 9/11, 11/5, 11/7, 11/5).

Jen put up a reasonable fight against Leanne, but was taken out in four sets, with Leanne proving to be one of the top players in Pennant four (7/11, 11/7, 13/11, 11/7). The next match marked up another win for Dunkley, when Maria proved too much for the improving Jakob (11/3, 11/7, 11/4), this brought the ledger back to even. Connor and Jake had a good tussle, with Connor collecting the Rubber for Tankard (11/7, 11/8, 4/11, 11/6).

With the importance of the Doubles being a big factor each week, Leanne and Jakob did a terrific job against Maria and Jake, pocketing another win to put Tankard Two Rubber ahead. (11/4, 11/8, 11/5).

With Dunkley needing this Rubber to stay in the Match, Leanne and Maria had a ripper five setter, with Leanne snatching the first two sets, Maria had to pull out her wall of defense, with the rallies never ending. Try as she may, Maria didn’t have what it took in the last set, but will be back to fight another never ending battle very soon (11/7, 11/8, 7/11, 7/11, 11/8). This win gave Tankard a well deserved victory on the night.

Nathan and Jen always seem to push their matches out to five and this was no different, with both giving it their all. The last set was taken out to 14, with Nathan snatching the win (11/8, 7/11, 4/11, 11/9, 14/12). The last game of the night was between Jakob and Jake, which saw a very confident Jakob finish it off in three sets (11/6, 12/10, 11/9).

WINNER : Tankard Dental 8 to Dunkley Scales 3.

GAMES : 24 to 17

Mallee Meats were also needing a fill in on Wednesday. With Curtis Crabtree unable to play, Tom Gilmour stepped in to help out.

Weightman’s Packaging : Glenn Leeson, Gary Leach and Eddie Parker, Played  Mallee Meats : Curtis Crabtree (Tom Gilmour), Nathan Beard and Connor Burnett.

– Mallee Meats 6 (Tom Gilmour 3, Conner Burnett 2, Nathan Beard 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Glenn Leeson 2, Gary Leach 1)

Eddie and Nathan were up first and Eddie played a nice game, but with some great placement from Nathan, he took the Rubber in three sets (11/8, 11/9, 12/10). Connor has made some great improvements to his game and grabbed a set from Glenn in the next match, which fell to Weightman’s (11/9, 11/5, 7/11, 11/2). It was a ding dong contest when Gary and Tom hit the Table, with Gary winning the first two, Tom had to knuckle down, to take the remaining three and the Rubber (9/11, 9/11, 12/10, 11/4, 11/7).

Gary and Glenn seem to pair up very well in the Doubles and this was no exception, marking up a win, over Tom and Nathan (11/5, 11/7, 3/11, 11/9).

Glenn was pushed to the limit by Nathan, with a full on five sets going the way of Weightman’s after some amazing shots (7/11, 8/11, 13/11, 13/11, 14/12). Eddie fought hard, but was baffled by Tom’s spin and was taken out in three (11/9, 11/5, 11/4). Connor proved too tricky for Gary and although the last went to 12, the Rubber fell to Mallee Meats (11/9, 11/5, 12/10).

Once again Glenn stepped up in the Doubles, this time pairing with Eddie and winning in their clash with Tom and Connor (11/5, 11/7, 11/9).

With all even, Glenn’s encounter with Tom was important for both teams. It was a tight contest, with excellent ball placement from both, but Tom was just a little too strong and added a fifth Rubber to Mallee’s list (9/11, 11/9, 12/10, 12/10). Gary and Nathan’s match saw some grit by both players, pushing one another out to five. Gary put the foot down in the last two sets, bringing home a win for Weightmans, leaving both teams on five Rubbers (11/9, 10/12, 7/11, 11/7, 11/8). The deciding match was to come down to Eddie and Connor and it was exciting from start to finish.

With sets see sawing back and forth and Connor breaking through in the fifth set to give Mallee Meats the win (11/8, 10/12, 11/7, 5/11, 12/10).

WINNER : Mallee Meats 6  to Weightman’s Packaging 5.
