Head-to-head this season Cookes were two wins one loss against their opponents and finished second on the ladder while Choices Flooring were fourth going into the finals.

– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Wayne Carmichael 3, Leon Brown 2, Ed Hung 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Kate Carmichael 2, Casper McCarthy 1)

Early in the match Choices took a two – one lead courtesy of Leon Brown and Waye Carmichael defeating their respective singles opponents Russell Walder and Casper McCarthy. From this point Cookes took control of the Preliminary Final winning four of the next five matches including victory in both doubles which was huge in the context of the match.

The first doubles featured Cookes pair Kate Carmichael and Casper McCarthy recover from a one game to two deficit, against Choices duo Wayne Carmichael and Leon Brown, to win in five sets 6-11 11-5 9-11 11-5 11-6 a strong finish and a good win.

The second doubles was crucial for the Choices experienced pair of Wayne Carmichael and Ed Hung however it was the Cookes combination of Kate Carmichael and Russell Walder who proved too steady winning in four sets 11-7 11-5 7-11 11-2.

At 3-5 things looked grim for the Choices team however skipper Wayne Carmichael was expected to win over niece Kate however he did not have it all go his way and this was an excellent five set contest with many long rallies. In the end Wayne took the points 11-4 8-11 12-10 9-11 11-6 what a match and Choices Flooring remained alive, the score now 5-4 in Cooke’s favour.

The next match saw Cooke’s Casper McCarthy up against Leon Brown and it was always Brown who maintained control winning 11-7 11-9 11-2, a strong finish.

In a great fightback by Choices Flooring the match was now level at five rubbers all.

The two number three players Ed Hung for Choices and Cookes Russell Walder nervously stepped up to the table to decide their respective team’s fate, the winner would take his team to the Grand Final. Both sets of team mates nervously awaiting the outcome, head-to-head during the season honours were level between Hung and Walder, a win each.

From start to finish it was Hung who took control and maintained the ascendancy to win 11-6 11-5 11-7 much to the delight of his teammates. Hung had been too steady under pressure.

This had been an outstanding recovery from Choices Flooring and in an even team performance Wayne Carmichael, Leon Brown and Ed Hung won three, two and one singles respectively to win a spot in the grand final.

Cookes Pools & Spas had tried their hardest with Kate Carmichael winning two singles and Casper McCarthy one. Victory in both doubles had given their team every chance however it wasn’t to be.

The grand final now awaits and it should be another tight contest, during the season Mallee Bearings lead the head to head contests two to one. Mallee Bearings have only lost two matches for the season however one of these was against their grand final opponents way back in round five. Any team that has Joel Thomas in their lineup should start as favourites and Mallee Bearings will look to keep their winning run intact.

Head-to-head the Choices trio of Jason Gifkins, Kevin Johns and Harry Gujral had won two matches to one during the season however in their most recent meeting in June (Round 15) the Mallee Meats combination of Ash Morrison, Rasin Bhuiyan and David Sergi had enjoyed a 6-5 victory. Another positive for Mallee Meats was that skipper Ash Morrison had been in excellent form going in to this match winning 17 straight singles matches.

– Choices Flooring Mildura 6 (Jason Gifkins, Kevin Johns 2, Harry Gujral 1) d Mallee Meats 2 (Ashley Morrison 1)

Choices Flooring Mildura started the preliminary final with a bang winning the first three singles. The first match saw Choices Harry Gujral account for opposing number two Rasin Bhuiyan in fine style 11-9 11-2 11-7, well played by Harry. Teammate Jason Gifkins then shook off Meats David Sergi in four sets 11-5 5-11 11-2 11-9.

Then with their third singles in succession it was Choices Kevin Johns who defeated Mallee Meats skipper Ash Morrison 11-3 11-9 13-11, Johns was out of the blocks early taking the first game easily the second narrowly while in the third Morrison took a 6-1 lead and a fightback looked to be taking place however it wasn’t to be with Johns fighting back to win in straight sets.

Mallee Meats sensing the final slipping away lifted in the first doubles and what a tussle this was with Ash Morrison and Rasin Bhuiyan recording their first win with a marathon 8-11 11-6 12-10 5-11 11-7 victory over Gifkins and Johns.

Gifkins then pushed his team closer to a grand final berth when he defeated Rasin in three sets. Morrison then breathed some life back in to the Mallee Meats team by defeating Harry comfortably in another three setter. The score now 4-2 in Choice’s favour.

Veteran Kevin Johns then accounted for David Sergi who tried his hardest, however Johns too steady 11-6 11-4 11-7.

With Choices now taking the lead 5-2 the second doubles was not negotiable for Mallee Meats and their pair of Ash Morrison and David Sergi knew victory was required to stay alive. Their opponents Jason Gifkins and Harry Gujral started well and the first game was a close tussle with the points going to Jason and Harry, they then stepped up a gear and raced through the second winning it easily before Ash and David fought back in the third but to no avail, it was victory to the Choices pair of Jason and Harry 11-8 11-2 13-11 booking a spot in to the grand final with a 6-2 win.

For the victors both Jason and Kevin won two singles each and Harry with one singles and featuring in the second doubles victory had played a key role along with his team mates.

Choices Flooring Mildura now meet Cookes Pools & Spas in the grand final and this is expected to be close, they have met four times this season and sit at two wins apiece with Cookes winning the past two matches.

Bring on the Grand Final….

PENNANT THREE:

Hello and welcome to the Preliminary Finals as two team fight it out for the final spot in the Grand Final. Can Sam Campbell get her team into the final or will she and Regional Taxation Services be eliminated from the competition by Sammy’s Slammers?

– Sammy’s Slammers 6 (James Jarvis 3, Nhat Dat 1) d Regional Taxation Services 3 (Andrew Kremor 2, Sam Campbell 1)

Team captain and hopeful for the Grand Finals, James Jarvis hits it out with Ted Cleary in an excellent match of five sets. Ted missing by a millimetre, nearly became the third person to win a match against James. They had some great rallies and some near misses but James was sure to get his team on their way to the Grand Final and winning 11-2, 11-5, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4.

Straight after James and Ted, Nhat Dat takes a swing at Andrew Kremor (fill in for Peter Fitzpatrick). They had some short but great rallies leading to two very close final sets of five. 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 10-12, 15-13. Andrew was happy to get the next point for his team but wasn’t allowed to have a break as he soon had to play in the doubles with temporary team captain Sam Campbell. Going to four sets, Regional Taxation Services couldn’t hold on any longer despite winning the third set but lost to Sammy’s Slammers James Jarvis and Nhat Dat tying the scoresheet up 2 to 2 keeping it a close round.

To end the night, Sammy’s slammers only needed one more win and they make it into the Grand Final but Regional Taxation Services needed to win their next and final three matches or they would be eliminated. With a smile on his face, James Jarvis was happy to deliver his team into the Grand Final against Weightmans Packaging as he won the final game of the night against Andrew Kremor. 12-10, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-4. The final rubbers 6 to 3.

It wasn’t an easy task as Andrew was just as determined as James. The pressure was on for Regional Taxation Services but hope was lost in Ted’s view. After five sets, Sammy’s Slammers celebrate their win together by high fiving each other, leaving Sam Campbell with some bad news to deliver to her original teammates who, if they had made it, would’ve played with Sammy Campbell in the Grand Final.

Good luck Sammy’s Slammers in the Grand Final.

WINNER: Sammy’s slammers 6 d Regional Taxation Services 3 Games

Weightmans Packaging vs Sammy’s Slammers in Grand Final

PENNANT FOUR:

It was a big night with the 2nd and 3rd placed teams playing off to make it to the Grand Final. Both teams had put in some terrific performances throughout the Season when up against each other, but with the growth and improvement of Weightmans Packaging’s number three, Raj, it was definitely going to be a hard slog for Mallee Meats.

Weightmans Packaging team players : Curtis Crabtree, Gary Leach and Raj Gujral.

Mallee Meat team Players : Maria Starikov, Jenny Leach and Jake Hines.

– Weightmans Packaging 6 (Curtis Crabtree, Raj Gujral 2, Gary Leach 1) d Mallee Meats 2 (Maria Starikov 1)

The first match saw Jake, who has struggle a little with parts of his game over the course of the season, giving it his best against the Gary. The first set was very tight, with Jake looking to be getting on top, but Gary played a patient game and waited for his chance to pull it back to a win. The last two sets proved to be too much for Jake, with Gary marking up Weightmans first Rubber (13/1, 11/2,11/6).

Next in line were the two number one players, Maria and Curtis which turned out to be a real turn around. Set one and two went Maria’s way, with long rallies on most points. But it was Curtis who hung strong and had a great come back in an exciting five setter (7/11, 9/11, 11/6, 11/8, 11/7).

Jen and Raj were to face up in the third singles, which was going to need some focus on the part of Jen to pick up a win for Mallee. Both players executed some awesome shots and although Jen pressed her hardest, Raj’s game was still the better, in a well fought five set match (11/9, 8/11, 11/4, 10/12,11/8).

This put Mallee in a predicament, with Weightmans snatching the first three Rubbers. It would need some good skills, for Mallee to get back into this Prelim.

The first set of Doubles was between Maria and Jen  V  Curtis and Gary.

With full on concentration from all, Maria and Jen were able to pocket the first two sets, after a lot of edges and net falls from both teams. Curtis and Gary resurrected themselves in the third, with a comfortable win, but couldn’t hang on and lost it in the fourth (12/10, 12/10, 3/11, 11/6).

Ahh, this was exactly what Mallee needed, to give them a spark and hope for a solid run home.

Maria challenged Gary in the fourth singles match, with close first set Maria came out with a win and she knuckled down in the second and third, bringing out her defensive shots to secure another Mallee Rubber (12/10, 11/7, 11/4).

Jake had a good tussle with Raj, but probably had little show of beating him. Their middle set of three, showed some real grit, with Raj proving too strong (11/4, 11/9, 11/6).

It always seems to be an exciting but stressful match, when Curtis and Jen face up. Curtis has some amazing shots and knows just when to pull them out of his bag of tricks. On the other hand, Jen’s sheer determination is what keeps it going for her. It wound up being a four set match, with countless rallies, which fell in Curtis’s favor (8/11, 11/5, 11/4, 11/6).

With Weightmans only needing one more Rubber to take a clean win for the night, Mallee desperately needed to this last Doubles match.

Maria and Jake had to call on their concentration and a lot of luck going their way, coming up against Curtis and Raj. It was an exciting match to watch, with all hinging on this match, for both teams. All four sets included excellent shots and focus from both teams and in the end it was Weightmans who collected the win (11/9, 8/11, 11/9, 11/7).

Congratulations to Weightmans for a well deserved win and we wish them and Dunkley Scales best of luck in the Grand Final.

WINNER : Weightmans Packaging 6 to Mallee Meats 2. GAMES : 19 to 12.
