PENNANT ONE:

A 7-4 result and two 6-5 scorelines on the resumption of Sunraysia Table Tennis after the school holiday break saw a shakeup of the ladder with Choices Flooring Mildura moving to top place while their opponents Weightmans Packaging dropped to third.

Maccas Player of the round:

Pennant 1 – Tom Morrison
– Choices Flooring Mildura 7 (Jackson Tung 3, Liam Wood, Ashley Morrison 1) d Weightmans Packaging 4 (Jamie Kealley, Rohan Reimers 2)
Choices skipper Jackson Tung was in solid form winning three singles and to cap off a successful night he also took part in both doubles’ victories. His singles against opposing number one player Jamie Kealley was a highlight and went to four sets, Kealley plays a power game and Tung defended well as well as playing attacking shots of his own, Tung took the match 11-6 5-11 11- 13-11.

The first doubles was entertaining to say the least and the Weightmans pair of Jamie Kealley and Rohan Reimers looked to be in charge winning the first two games, however in an excellent fightback Tung and partner Liam Wood narrowly took the next three games by the barest of margins to win 10-12 6-11 11-9 13-11 12-10 a thriller!
Five setters were a feature of this contest, the match between Kealley and Wood was a beauty with Kealley narrowly taking the points 10-12 11-8 14-12 10-12 11-9. Unfortunately for Wood he served a fault at nine points all in the fifth and Kealley then pounced on match point to take the match.
Wood was on the wrong side of another five setter late in the match when Rohan Reimers recovered from a two-game deficit to win 9-11 8-11 12-10 11-7 11-3.
Despite Kealley and Reimers winning two singles each it was not enough for Weightmans Packaging to retain their top position on the ladder, and the Choices Flooring Mildura team are looking dangerous with Tung in such good form.
– Mallee Bearings 6 (Kate Carmichael 3, Tom Morrison 1) d Tankard Dental 5 (Reece Kurrle, Thanh Nguyen 2, Ed Hung 1)
With their second win on the trot Mallee Bearings have moved into the top four for the first time. The narrow 6-5 victory came over Tankard Dental and the match was probably decided in the very first match of the night when Bearings number two Tom Morrison outlasted Ed Hung in a long five set tussle. This was an entertaining match with four of the five games decided by a margin of two points. Morrison held his nerve in the fifth to win 12-10 9-11 11- 6-11 12-10.

Kate Carmichael also played a key role in Mallee Bearings victory by winning three singles as well as partnering teammates Morrison and Lee Leeson to victory in both doubles, the doubles being crucial in the narrow result.

Carmichael is in good form as she prepares for the 2025 National Veterans Championships to be played in Brisbane next week where she will represent Victoria in the Ladies Over 30 team. Carmichael and opposing number one Reece Kurrle fought out an entertaining singles match as they seem to do each time they play, Kurrle possesses a powerful forehand and consistent back hand and Carmichael was forced to defend well winning 11-5 11-9 2-11 11-9.
Kurrle and teammate Thanh Nguyen both won two singles however it was the lack of success in the doubles which was costly.
– Cookes Pools & Spas 6 (Arhuang (Wong) Lau 3, Russell Walder 1) d Regional Taxation Services 5 (Mark Dorman, Paul Kealley 2, Quentin Clark 1)
With their third win in succession Cookes Pools & Spas have moved to second on the ladder with their 6-5 victory over Regional Taxation Services who had their chances to grab the four points. For Cookes Arhuang Lau was in fine form after missing last round. Lau won his three singles and combined with teammates Russell Walder and Jason Gifkins to win both doubles.

The doubles are always an important component and the first saw Lau and Walder recover from a deficit against the leftie duo of Mark Dorman and Paul Kealley to win 11-8 15-17 3-11 11-5 11-4. The RTS trio of Dorman, Paul Kealley and Quentin Clarke won five singles between them but like the other matches it was the doubles which cost them victory.

Maccas Player of the round:

Pennant 2 – Josh Arnold
Cookes Pools & Spas 7 Duy Truong (3), David Sergi (1), Deegan Kerslake (1) defeated Mallee Meats 4 Harry Gujral (2), Therese Fitzpatrick (2), Nhat Dat (0).
In our first round back after school holidays, Cookes Pools & Spas took out a solid win over second placed Mallee Meats. Cookes were on top of their game, winning both doubles and their No. 3 Deegan Kerslake taking a tough five-set win over Nhat Dat, who filled-in for Peter Fitzpatrick.

The first rubber saw Sergi defeat Dat in straight sets 11-8, 11-4, 11-7 while Meats captain Gujral took down young Kerslake, also in three sets 11-8, 11-2, 11-3. Then Cookes skipper Truong obtained his first singles win, besting Fitzpatrick 11-6, 11-6, 11-7. It was then on to the first doubles wherein Cookes got ahead early in the match, taking the first two sets 11-5, 11-9, but Meats caught up to them in the third and fourth, levelling the score 11-6, 11-7. This put them back within reach of the win, but Cookes put them back in their place, winning the final set 11-9.
Gujral then went on to defeat Sergi in four sets 11-9, 11-4, 12-14, 11-5. Meanwhile Truong racked up another win by downing Dat 11-6, 11-6, 11-9 while teammate Kerslake struggled against Fitzpatrick, losing in three sets 11-8, 11-7, 11-5. Truong and Kerslake proved a strong pair in the night’s second doubles, with the Cookes duo taking the game in straight sets 11-9, 11-7, 11-5.

Next up was the clash of the No. 1’s wherein Gujral attacked early and took the first set 11-9 but couldn’t keep up with his opponent in the last three sets, losing 6-11, 8-11, 6-11, granting Cookes’ the night’s victory 6-3.

Fitzpatrick then managed to get her second singles win, defeating Sergi 11-7, 5-11, 11-5, 11-6. In the final rubber Kerslake and Dat faced off, with the latter putting up a good fight but succumbing in the fifth and losing 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 5-11.
Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 23 games to 17.
Weightman’s Packaging 6 Rasin Bhuiyan (2), Michael Tan (2), Steve Parker (1) defeated Pinnacle Packers 5 Josh Arnold (3), James Jarvis (1), Ryan Hensgen (0).
Packers had Weightmans down 5 rubbers to 4 at the end of the night but thanks to the efforts of Michael Tan and Steve Parker Weightmans pulled through and won the last two games to take the victory 6-5.

Tan marked down his first win of the evening by besting Hensgen in four sets 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8 while opposing captain Arnold got his side’s first rubber, defeating Parker in straight sets 11-9, 11-4, 11-8. Jarvis then gave Bhuiyan some trouble in their game with the latter dropping the third set but coming out on top 11-5, 12-10, 6-11, 12-10. Up next, a hotly contested first doubles match wherein Weightmans just grabbed the first set 13-11 but couldn’t follow it up and went down in four sets 6-11, 9-11, 11-13.
Tan was looking to take down a big score in Josh Arnold and he almost got it done, taking the No. 1 to five sets but coming off second best 11-5, 13-11, 8-11, 6-11, 7-11.

Bhuiyan continued to play his strong and steady game, taking out Hensgen with little trouble 11-6, 11-7, 11-1. Parker then threw caution to the wind in his match against Jarvis, resulting in a tight five-setter with Jarvis emerging victorious 4-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10. Weightmans got their revenge in the second doubles, with Bhuiyan and Parker taking the game in four sets 11-5, 11-9, 3-11, 11-6, tying the score 4 apiece.

Arnold then made it 5-4 by downing tough customer Bhuiyan 8-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 but Tan wasn’t ready to give up just yet. He and Jarvis faced off with Tan winning the first 11-6, Jarvis the second 12-10, then Tan getting ahead with a third set win 11-6. Jarvis however didn’t back down, taking the fourth set 11-9, but Tan got over the line first in the fifth, 11-9, levelling the score again 5-5. The decider would be Hensgen versus Parker, with the latter outplaying the former and winning comfortably 11-4, 11-9, 11-6.
Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 24 games to 20.

PENNANT THREE:
The school holiday break was done, the players refreshed and ready to go!!!

This round would see first play third and second up against fourth. Could third and fourth topple the top two teams.

For Mallee Meats skipper Sabrina Fitzpatrick was unavailable and replaced by Rod Galvin, while Sammy’s Slammers number three and Maccas player of last round Leanne Wilson was out with an elbow and Raj Gujral came in to the team.
Maccas Player of the round:

Pennant 3 – Cooper Kalms
– Regional Taxation Services 8 (Karly Leach 3, Cooper Kalms 2, Leo Parker 1) d Sammy’s Slammers 3 (Sam Campbell 2, Koby Grace 1)
The undefeated Sammy’s Slammers would have been confident coming in to this match even though number three Leanne Wilson had to drop out of the team with an injured elbow. Their form had been excellent with skipper Sam Campbell undefeated in singles over the first three rounds while number two Koby Grace was running third and proving consistent.
You can never discount any team which includes Karly Leach and when she is on it will be difficult for the opposition.

A big result took place in the very first game when Cooper Kalms for RTS surprised Koby with some very consistent play to win in three sets, a great start by Cooper who has returned to table tennis after a ten-year break, he previously played in a very strong junior pennant.
RTS skipper Karly then defeated fill in Raj Gujral as expected while counterpart Sam Campbell followed up by defeating Leo Parker. RTS took a 2-1 lead after the first block of singles.
The first doubles as usual was important and it was the RTS pair of Karly and Leo Parker who were able to keep Sam and Koby at bay in what was a close three set tussle. Karly and Leo were able to maintain the ascendancy in each game, just!!
The final score 11-8 16-14 11-9 and Regional Taxation Services now took a 3-1 lead.
The next block of three singles all went to four sets with Regional Taxation Services again winning two of the three to stamp their authority on the match, Sammy’s Slammers were in unchartered waters as RTS took a 5-2 lead, could they fight back to maintain their undefeated run?

The second doubles was a ripper, RTS pair Karly and Cooper took a two-love lead although both games were close, the Slammers pair of Sam and Raj fought back to level at two games all in an attempt to keep their team in the chase for the four points. Karly and Cooper edged ahead in the fifth and were able to grab the points 11-9 11-8 9-11 10-12 11-7 a top-class match, they also banked the four points, an impressive effort against their previously undefeated opposition.
For the third time RTS then won two of the following three singles to record a comprehensive 8-3 win. Karly proved too steady for Sam inflicting the first defeat of the season on Sam. This was a very good straight sets win by Karly as Sam has been in excellent form this season.
To cap off an excellent match by him, Cooper defeated Raj in the final match in four sets to win his second singles of the night, these two wins complimented by his doubles victory with Karly.

This had been a good team effort by the Regional Taxation Services trio as Leo Parker had also chipped in with a singles victory as well as teaming up with Karly to win the first doubles.
Winner: Regional Taxation Services 8 defeated Sammy’s Slammers 3
Games: 25 to 14
– Mallee Meats 6 (Brenden Johnson 2, Rodney Galvin, Hayden Wilson 1) d Exposed Signage/Apparel 5 (Nick Kiapekos 3, Steve Pongrac 2)
Whilst the other match was slightly one sided this contest was a thriller going right to the wire. This was fourth, Mallee Meats who had not won a game up against second on the ladder, with two wins, Exposed Signage/Apparel and what a match it proved to be.

Mallee Meats were without skipper Sabrina Fitzpatrick, and she was replaced by Rod Galvin
Amazingly seven five set matches took place and at one stage there was a run of five five setters played in six games.

For the Exposed team Nick Kiapekos impressed with his stamina by playing three singles and a doubles, all going to five sets. For Mallee Meats Hayden Wilson was also busy with all his singles going to five sets.
To the play, Brendan Johnson was able to get Mallee Meats off to a good start by defeating Curtis in three sets. The first game was amazing, Curtis took a 10-2 lead only for Brenden to mount a brilliant comeback to take the game 13-11, wow!
The next two singles, both five setters were won by Exposed Signage/Apparel. Steve Pongrac after trailing Hayden Wilson one game to two was able to steady and go on and win in five. Steve’s teammate Nick Kiapekos then outlasted Rod Galvin in another lengthy five setter, Nick taking the points 11-9 7-11 5-11 11-3 11-3.
This was followed by another outstanding match with Rod and Brenden teaming up against the experienced pair of Steve and Nick, what a battle and of course another five setter containing many long rallies. The Meats pair of Rod and Brenden proved too steady in the end winning 11-7 2-11 11-13 11-8 11-9, a good comeback after dropping two games early.

Mallee Meats then won two singles in succession courtesy of Brenden defeating Steve in four sets and then Rod outlasting Curtis in, of course, another five setter. The score now 4-2 in favour of Mallee Meats.
Nick then reduced the deficit by defeating Hayden 11-9 in the FIFTH!!!
The second doubles was big for both teams and again it was a Mallee Meats combination who took the points. This time Rod and Hayden proved too consistent for Steve and Curtis in only the second three set result in the match.
The next two singles saw the Exposed team bounce back with firstly Steve downing Rod in four sets while Nick then won his third singles, in five of course, his victim being Brenden in a nail biter. Nick took the points 11-9 7-11 9-11 11-8 12-10 what a finish.
The score now stood at five rubbers all, a good comeback by Exposed Signage/Apparel.

Mallee Meats Hayden Wilson knew a win by him would see his team bank their first four points however opponent Curtis took the first 13-11, Hayden fought back to claim the second 13-11 but the third was close again, point for point and Curtis edged ahead by taking the third 11-9, Hayden again levelled the match winning 11-8. The score stood at two games all and in an exciting fifth it was Hayden who narrowly won 11-9. Four of the games were decided by a margin of two points indicating how close these two players are. This had been Hayden’s third five set singles and his first win, what a time to do that. He had also played in an important doubles win.
This had been a fighting win by Mallee Meats and with this victory only two wins separates first to fourth. Brenden Johnson played a key role in their first victory with two singles, while Rod may have only won one singles but he had importantly played in both doubles wins.
Amazingly for Exposed Signage/Apparel Nick Kiapekos won three singles and Steve Pongrac two and they still came up short in what had been an eventful match.

As indicated earlier seven five set matches took place with four of these separated by two points in the fifth.

PENNANT FOUR:
Wednesday had some amazing Matches, with the encounter between Dunkley Scales and Weightman’s Packaging, pumping out five 5 setters, with both teams determined to come away the win.

Four set matches were the flavor of the night for Tankard Dental and Mallee Meats, with some great battles taking place.
Maccas Player of the round:

Pennant 4 – Wendy Simpson
– Dunkley Scales 8 (Wendy Simpson 3, Glenn Leeson, Jakob Grzan 2) d Weightmans Packaging 3 (Tom Gilmour 2)
Dunkley : Glenn Leeson, Jenny Leach (Fill-in Wendy Simpson) and Jakob Grzan. Weightman’s : Tom Gilmour, Eddy Parker and Liam Milton.
It’s a little awkward to comment on this win, as I think it would have been a surprise to both Teams to have been five nil up, or five nil down, after the fifth match. But that is exactly how things sat, with Weightman’s number one, Tom, winning their first Rubber, in his second Singles.
There were some comfortable wins and some hard fought matches along the way though, with the number two’s playing off, Jakob had an impressive win over the much improved Eddy, in what I could only imagine, had many long Rallies.
Wendy claimed the Rubber over Tom, after a lengthy contest, which would have included an array of tricky shots.
The combination of Glenn and Wendy was too much for Tom and Eddie handle. Weightman’s pushed back in the third game, but couldn’t keep it going, contributing to another Rubber falling to Dunkley.
Glenn didn’t have a good start to his match against Eddie, having to move into another gear, after being two down, making an impressive come back.

When Liam faced up to Wendy, he played his first couple of games very well, but Wendy’s experience pretty much gave Dunkley the nights win, adding the sixth Rubber.
Weightman’s pair, of Tom and Liam, came to life in the final Doubles, getting the better of Dunkley’s, Glenn and Jakob, in a ripper five games.

Tom must have found his mo-jo, as he pushed on and brought home a win for his team, against Glenn, in a close five game tussle.
Eddie went down in three, when he clashed with Wendy, but wasn’t disgraced, with each game a close battle. This brought up Wendy’s third singles win for the night.

Jakob’s consistency continued, once again, pocketing two wins for the Round.
WINNER : Dunkley Scales 8 Weightman’s Packaging 3.
GAMES : 28 to 17.
– Mallee Meats 7 (Yen Hwak 3, Nathan Beard, Conner Burnett 1) d Tankard Dental 4 (Maria Starikov, Ildi Healy 2)
Tankard : Maria Starikov, Ildi Healy and Andrew Jefferies. Mallee : Yen Hwak, Nathan Beard and Conner Burnett.
The contest between these two teams seemed slightly more even, through the night, with Tankard not letting Mallee get too far ahead.

Nathan and Andrew were fairly balanced in their tussle, which came to a halt after three games went the way of Mallee.
Conner wrestled his way to 12 in the first game against Maria, but then, up went the Defensive wall of Maria, which landed her the win.

Yen’s sneaky serve and lightening back hand saw Ildi fall after four games, but I’m sure she would have given it her all, in the contest.
Although tight, Maria and Andrew didn’t have the fire power to overcome Yen and Nathen in the Doubles.
Every time Maria and Nathan face each other, every game is a full on Rally, with neither giving an inch and this was no different. In the finish Maria took the win, which gave Tankard a needy Rubber.

Andrew gave Yen a scare, snatching the second set, but couldn’t keep the focus going, with Mallee now two Rubbers ahead.
Connor moved under the radar in his match with Ildi, sneaking the first two games, with Ildi turning the tables and walking away with the win.
Yen and Connor versing Maria and Ildi. After four games Mallee collected their second Doubles for the night, which can be the telling point, between victory or lose, in the overall tally. Yen and Connor versing Maris and Ildi.
Yen was running hot on Wednesday, with another three singles wins to add to his aggregate and the sixth Rubber for Mallee, after his win against Maria.

Ildi worked out Nathan’s game in the last singles bracket, bringing home a win for Tankard.

Conner and Andrew were the last to play it out, with the first two games evenly contested, before Conner put the pressure on and put the final stamp on Mallee’s Victory.
WINNER : Mallee Meats 7 Tankard Dental 4.
