During the season their head-to-head record was one a piece and both sides advanced to the grand final by winning their semi finals in two 6-5 thrillers after finishing the season in third and fourth position on the ladder respectively.
Due to illness last weeks’ Regional Taxation Services hero number three Jason Gifkins was a late withdrawal due to illness and he was replaced by Tom Morrison.
– Regional Taxation Services 6 (Kate Carmichael 3, Thanh Nguyen, Tom Morrison 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Mark Dorman 2, Dylan Wood 2)
The first two matches went as expected with RTS number two Thanh Nguyen defeating Ed Hung in straight sets while Cookes Mark Dorman then accounted for Tom Morrison in three sets to level the grand final at one rubber all.
RTS skipper Kate Carmichael took to the table against Dylan Wood, only three weeks earlier Wood had caused an upset downing Carmichael in three sets and this time it was a close tussle in the first with Carmichael hanging on to win 12-10 in a great battle, the second and third continued to be entertaining however this time around Carmichael was able to maintain the ascendancy and win in three sets. RTS now took a 2-1 lead.
The first doubles was now huge in the context of the match and it was the RTS pair of Carmichael and Nguyen matched against Dorman and Wood taking the first game 11-7 before their opponents grabbed the second 11-8, the third was a nail biter with Carmichael and Nguyen stealing the game 11-9 after trailing 7-9, at this point they then took control in the fourth winning 11-3. RTS now were leading 3-1.
The second block of three singles saw Cookes Mark Dorman defeating Nguyen after dropping the first game. Kate Carmichael then defeated Cookes number three Ed Hung in three sets to enable Regional Taxation Services to go to a 4-2 lead while
Cookes Dylan Wood then improved the situation for his team with a straight sets win over Tom Morrison.
The second doubles was now important for Cookes and it was their experienced pair of Mark Dorman and Ed Hung who for three games in succession would keep their noses in front of Carmichael and Morrison winning 11-9 11-7 13-11 in another close battle, Cookes had now levelled the match at four rubbers all.
With three singles to play the grand final could go either way , the two captains Dorman and Carmichael now met and what a match this was to be,
Dorman drew Carmichael in to his chopping game and many long rallies took place and when Dorman took the first two games 11-9 in each Cookes were well placed however Carmichael knew she had to pick up the pace or the grand final could be gone.
By serving quicker and attacking more often she was able to take control in the third and similarly in the fourth to level at two games all. The good crowd in attendance were witnessing a good comeback and again in the fifth Carmichael took the early initiative to go on and win 9-11 9-11 11-4 11-6 11-4 a stunning about turn. Carmichael had taken her team to a 5-4 lead.
Cookes Dylan Wood then levelled the match accounting for Thanh Nguyen in an impressive style given that Nguyen is a difficult opponent with his mix of chop and attacking play. Wood took the points 11-5 11-9 11-5.
With the score at five rubbers all Cookes Ed Hung the hero from the semi-final a week earlier who won at five rubbers all lined up against RTS fill-in Tom Morrison.
Head-to-head during the season Hung held a 2-0 lead however as we know finals can be a different ball game. The first game was close with both players nervous but giving their all. Morrison was able to take this game narrowly and again in the second it was point for point until Morrison was able to go to a 2-0 lead. The third was a sensational game as Hung gave his all in an attempt to keep his team alive. As the third neared the end Morrison held two grand final points at 10-8 however Hung would not lay down and levelled the game at 10 points all. This game went on and on with team mates now nervously watching on. Hung gained a game point on a couple of occasions however with his seventh match point Morrison won the third 18-16 an amazing score line.
In an entertaining grand final Regional Taxation Services were premiers by the barest of margins, Cookes Pools & Spas had given their all.
For Regional Taxation Services Kate Carmichael won three singles while teammates Thanh Nguyen and Tom Morrison won one each, Success in the first doubles by Carmichael and Nguyen was also crucial. RTS had been impressive in the finals given they occupied third position on the ladder for seven of the ten rounds.
While missing from the grand final line up RTS number three Jason Gifkins had played a key role for his team by recovering from 0-6 in the fifth when the scores stood at five rubbers all in the semi-final a week earlier.
Cookes Pools & Spas pair of Mark Dorman and Dylan Wood won two singles each in the grand final while Dorman and Ed Hung took the second doubles. Their effort to make the grand final from fourth on the ladder was commendable

PENNANT TWO:
Pinnacle Packers looked like they were well on their way to a victory in the 2024 Summer Season grand final, but Mallee Meats were able to pull off some daring upset matches that ultimately granted them the victory.

Mallee Meats 6 John Fitzpatrick (3), Mark Cleary (1), Riley Clemence (1) defeated Pinnacle Packers 3 Rasin Bhuiyan (1), Ryan Peterson (1), Therese Fitzpatrick (0).
The first match pitted Clemence against Peterson, with the former taking the first set 11-5, Peterson the second 11-5, Clemence held on in the third and won 11-7, but Peterson proved too strong and won the next two sets 11-6, 11-8.
Next up, brother and sister faced off, with the older Fitzpatrick taking the win, 11-9, 11-5, 11-3.
Teammate Cleary then took on Bhuiyan, taking the first set 11-9, but Bhuiyan was unfazed, taking the next three sets 11-8, 12-10, 11-7.
Then, Packers marked down their third rubber by taking the night’s first doubles match in a confident three set win, 11-8, 12-10, 11-6.
With Packers halfway to the finish line, Meats needed to turn up the heat. Fitzpatrick led the charge by defeating Peterson in a tough four setter.
He took the first 11-6, Peterson fired back, taking the second 11-9, but Fitzpatrick bought it home in the third and fourth 11-3, 11-8.
The next game would be the upset game of the night which put Packers on the back foot; Clemence vs Bhuiyan. Clemence took the first 11-8, Bhuiyan the second 11-5, Clemence got up again with a win in the third 11-4, but Bhuiyan stuck to his guns and nabbed the fourth 11-7.
The score now two sets all, both players were equally determined to take the win in this the fifth and final set. Fighting tooth and nail, Clemence downed Bhuiyan and won 11-7, dealing a crushing blow to Packers. This win breathed new life into Meats’ confidence, with Cleary besting Fitzpatrick in four sets 11-8, 9-11, 11-1, 11-5, granting his team the lead 4 games to 3.
Meats came from behind again in the second doubles match; Fitzpatrick and Clemence going down 5-11 to Bhuiyan and Fitzpatrick in the first set but then winning three gruelling sets in a row 13-11, 13-11, 12-10 to finally secure their fifth rubber. They now needed only one more game to gain the premiership title, while Packers needed to win all the three remaining matches if they were going to turn this night around for themselves.
Fitzpatrick and Bhuiyan stepped up to the table. These two players have been very close to each other on the aggregate and have had some tight matches throughout the season, including facing each other in the Super 8’s grand final. On this night however, Fitzpatrick proved too strong for Bhuiyan, taking the win in three sets 11-5, 11-8, 11-6.
Commiserations to Pinnacle Packers who have played against some very tough competition this season and still managed to make it into the final and play their very best. Congratulations to Mallee Meats and especially to Mark Cleary who has gotten himself a premiership win in his debut season.
Final score 6 games to 3 and 21 rubbers to 14.

PENNANT THREE:
What a sensational night of Table Tennis it was. There was excitement, anticipation and some very nervous players, which made for an exhilarating encounter.

The stage was set, or should I say the Table was set, for the big clash, between Mallee Meats, who had sat at the top of the Ladder, for most of the season and Dunkley Scales, entered the Semi’s in third position. These Teams had played off twice over the season, with both picking up a 6 to 5 win. As we all know, when the Finals hit, the rung on the Ladder, really means nothing, as pressure can become a deciding factor.
– Mallee Meats 6 (Karly Leach 3, Curtis Crabtree, Jenny Leach 1) d Dunkley Scales 5 (Koby Grace, Hayden Wilson 2)
The first set of Singles saw Dunkley take a quick lead after scooping up two wins. Jen was facing Hayden in the opening match, and although she gave it her best, the task was a little too much, with Hayden collecting the first Rubber for Dunkley, playing some excellent shots. (11/7, 11/5, 11/4).
Ildi was then up against Karly, which, with Karly’s form throughout the season, was always going to be a tough ask. Ildi put up a good fight, but couldn’t stop Mallee, who evened the Rubbers (11/5, 11/3, 11/4).
Curtis can play a fantastic game and has taken Koby to five sets before, but Koby had the upper hand in this battle, with the speed and accuracy of his shots bringing the match to an end in three (11/6, 11/6, 11/8).
The first Doubles was a ripper and a thrilling five setter, with Karly and Curtis battling it out against Koby and Hayden. The first two sets fell to Dunkley, which called for some deep focus from Mallee, who made the next two theirs. It was shot for shot and point for point, with in the last set, with Dunkley adding a vital Rubber, to put the score at three to one. (11/8, 11/9, 5/11, 11/13, 11/8).
The pressure was back on Mallee Meats Captain, Karly, who was about to step up against Hayden. After some great shot play by both, once again Karly’s absolute focus got her the win and gave Mallee some breathing space (11/3, 12/10, 11/7).
Jen had very little chance of coming out in front in her challenge against Dunkley’s Captain, Koby. You never walk to the Table, thinking you’re going to be beaten …. Well, that’s what they say, but lets face it, unless you have nerves of steel and super sharp reflexes, you’re not stopping Koby’s bullet shots. So unfortunately, Jen let another Rubber go, which then moved the advantage back to Dunkley (11/5, 11/2, 11/4).
Ildi had a super game against Curtis, pushing him out to four sets, but it was Curtis who prevailed, with some very tricky side spin, in a match which Mallee desperately needed, as Dunkley crept ever so close to an early win (10/12, 11/5, 11/7, 11/7).
With only one Rubber now separating these teams, the Daughter and Mother combination had to win the last Doubles, to bring things back to even. Koby and Ildi ripped through the first set, leaving Mallee on 2 point and a little nervous. Karly and Jen made a pact, that they were going to pull everything out of their box of tricks to give their team a fighting chance, which is exactly how it rolled (2/11, 11/7, 11/5, 11/6).
Now came the big challenge, which number one player would mark up that badly needed fifth Rubber. Koby and Karly’s games are usually action packed and although this match had many Rallies, Karly put together a tremendous contest, with pressure on Koby in every point. It was Mallee to make the first move, to get to five Rubbers (11/3, 11/8, 11/7).
With a win the only option for Dunkley, Hayden and Curtis had the weight on their shoulders. Both meetings through the Season, the matches had gone to five sets and both had given Curtis the win. Hayden had been playing exceptionally well in his matches on the night and was full of confidence, which helped him immensely, in gaining this win. Well done to both, in a pressure situation (11/4. 13/11, 12/10).
Well, this came as a bit of a shock to the last two standing, with Ildi and Jen now shaking in their shoes and hoping they could put together a winning match for their team. Ildi had the wood over Jen in their past meeting and both sensed the importance of this match. You could have cut the air with a knife, as both players were giving it their all. The first two sets were very tight, creating some really great rallies with amazing placement of shots by Ildi.
The palms were sweating and the hearts were thumping. In the end, it was Jen who was totally in the Zone, who would bring home the winning Rubber for Mallee Meats to be awarded the Victory (12/10, 11/9, 11/5).
What a fantastic night …. It’s never easy to want to win, when you’re up against friends.
To see Curtis help our Team to the Final and take home the winning Trophy, in his last competitive game, before heading to Adelaide for Uni, was awesome.
To win a Grand Final in your Daughters Team and see her play such brilliant season of Table Tennis, being undefeated over 36 Singles matches, was priceless. Such amazing Memories to Treasure.
