Mallee Meats 7 John Fitzpatrick (3), Duy Truong (2), Riley Clemence (1) defeated Cookes Pools and Spas 4 Ashley Morrison (2), David Sergi (1), Nhat Dat (0).
In the last round of the 2024 Summer season, Cookes were unable to defeat top team Mallee Meats, who after a rocky start to the season, have won the last six rounds of this comp and will finish the season at the top of the ladder. Duy Truong substitutes again, this time for Meat’s No.2 Mark Cleary.
First up, Clemence gave Sergi a bit of trouble in the opening game but was unable to bring home a win, going down 12-14, 8-11, 3-11. Meat’s captain Fitzpatrick then soundly defeated Dat also in three, 11-3, 11-1, 11-3, to which opposing captain Morrison responded by quickly dispatchung Truong, again in three, 11-4, 11-7, 11-2. Both doubles in this match were hard-fought five setters; the first pairing up Fitzpatrick and Truong against Morrison and Sergi. Meats took the first set 12-10, but Cookes retaliated hard, snatching the next two 11-9, 11-9. But Meats were not out of it yet and came back from a set behind to take the win, 11-9, 11-4.
Fitzpatrick notched up his team’s third rubber after defeating Sergi in four sets, 11-6, 12-10, 3-11, 11-8, but Morrison levelled the score 3-3 with a win over Clemence 11-4, 11-3, 11-9. Truong then went up against Dat, securing victory in three sets, 11-9, 11-3, 11-5. Now onto the second doubles wherein Cookes comfortably won the first two sets, 11-5, 11-5. But Meats weren’t having it, and much to Cookes’s chagrin, took the next two sets 11-5, 11-9. At two sets all, Meats
then seemed to run out of steam in the home stretch, losing the final set to Cookes, 11-8.
At four games all, Morrison was unable to take down Fitzpatrick, losing 11-5, 11-5, 11-5.
Truong then secured the winning rubber by besting Sergi, again in three, 11-6, 11-3, 11-4. Clemence then solidified the score at 7-4 with a win over Dat, 11-7, 7-11, 11-5, 11-9.
Final score 7 rubbers to 4 and 23 games to 16.
Pinnacle Packers 6 Rasin Bhuiyan (3), Ryan Peterson (1), Therese Fitzpatrick (1) defeated Weightman’s Packaging 5 Josh Arnold (1), Harry Gujral (2), James Jarvis (1).
After spending most of the season on the bottom of the ladder, Pinnacle Packers jump up to second place after their round 10 victory over Weightman’s Packaging. Weightman’s skipper Josh Arnold had a disappointing night, winning only one singles match and going down to opposing No. 3 Therese Fitzpatrick with the score at 5-5.
In the opening rubber, Gujral took down Fitzpatrick in three sets, 11-7, 14-12, 13-11. Bhuiyan then defeated Arnold in three sets, 11-8, 11-7, 11-8, and with a brilliant effort from both players, Peterson just got around Jarvis to secure the second rubber. Jarvis took the first set 11-8, Peterson the second and third 12-10, 11-9, Jarvis then easily won the fourth 11-3, but couldn’t keep his momentum up, going down in the fifth 10-12. Packers duo Bhuiyan and Peterson then bested Weightman’s Arnold and Gujral in the first doubles; 11-8, 11-5, 11-6, getting themselves halfway home with the score now 3-1.
Bhuiyan then had a hard time against Gujral, who fought tooth and nail to win the fifth rubber. Bhuiyan dominated in the first two sets, winning 11-1, 11-9 but Gujral clawed his way back in the next two, 11-7, 11-5. Despite this setback, Bhuiyan came out on top in the fifth,
downing Gujral 11-9. Packers now had some breathing space, with the score at 4-1. But it was at this moment that Weightmans launched a devastating offensive, winning the next three rubbers to level the score 4-4. First, Jarvis took out Fitzpatrick in three sets, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8. Then captain Arnold bested Peterson in four, 10-12, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7 and then teaming up with Jarvis, won the second doubles against Packers, winning in four sets, 11-5, 11-5, 5-11, 11-7.
With the score now 4-4, Jarvis threw everything he had at skipper Bhuiyan. He lost the first set, 4-11, recovered well taking the next two 11-9, 11-5, but Bhuiyan proved too strong, and he lost the last two sets, 9-11, 2-11. Packers were now one game away from the win, but Gujral was able to halt their progress, taking a hard-fought win over Peterson in five sets. Peterson won the first 11-5, Gujral retaliated by taking the second 11-5, Peterson grabbed the third 11-6 but Gujral swooped in and took the last two sets 11-8, 11-2.
The last rubber pitted captain Arnold against No. 3 Fitzpatrick and with the score now 5-5, Weightmans wanted this last game badly, and most people would have been reasonably sure that Arnold could secure the win without too much trouble. But alas, it was not to be,
with Fitzpatrick showing no mercy and cutting down Arnold in three sets 11-6, 11-7, 11-8. Disappointing for Arnold but a great effort from Fitzpatrick to get her team over the line in the tiebreaker.
Final score 6 rubbers to 5 and 22 games to 21.

Regional Taxation Services were up against Mallee Meats and although Regional were out of the running, the fight was on, to see if someone could break Karly Leach’s super, undefeated run, with Tom Gilmore, declaring he would be leaving with three wins and ending Karly’s rein.
