PENNANT ONE:
Sixty six players took to the tables at the Irymple Leisure Centre in the much anticipated round one matches of the first Sunraysia Table Tennis Pennant of the year.
Despite losing several players from 2022 the STTA are pleased to hold their numbers with several players welcomed for their first taste of competitive table tennis. The biggest coup for the competition is the return of Joel Thomas after a year off. The talented Thomas is Sunraysia’s number one player however Matt Ljubic who was in outstanding form in 2022 has the potential to make life difficult for Thomas and their matches will be a highlight for spectators.
Also returning to pennant one is Liam Wood who has been out of the area for a couple of years. Pennant two aggregate winners Paul Kealley and Rohan Reimers have been promoted after outstanding Summer Pennant form. This is the first time Kealley has featured in pennant one while Reimers as a teenager some 19 years ago returns to the number one pennant.
– Tankard Dental 8 (Jackson Murphy 3, Wayne Carmichael 2, Paul Kealley 1) d Max Miller Carpets 3 (Leon Brown 2. Kate Carmichael 1)
Even though this was only round one there was some excellent table tennis and in particular Jackson Murphy hinted at a good year coming up with three singles victories for Tankard Dental in their 8-3 victory over Max Miller Carpets. Murphy sporting a new bat and wearing glasses was in fine form defeating Kate Carmichael in four sets and the talented Leon Brown in another four setter. Murphy also teamed up with Wayne Carmichael to win the first doubles in five sets against Carmichael and Brown.
– Cookes Pools & Spas 6 (Joel Thomas 3, Russell Walder 1) d Weightmans Packaging 5 (Reece Kurrle, Jackson Tung 2, Ed Hung 1)
In his debut Tankard number three Paul Kealley played well winning a singles and partnering Wayne Carmichael in a five set doubles victory.
Joel Thomas showed no sign of rustiness winning three singles and leading Cookes Pools & Spas to a narrow 6-5 victory over Weightmans Packaging who were so close to gaining the four points. Thomas also partnered up with team mates Russell Walder and mother Lee Leeson to win both doubles.
With the match at five rubbers all Cooke’s number three Russell Walder recovered from a 1-2 game deficit to defeat Ed Hung 4-11 11-6 8-11 11-8 11-6 a great comeback. Weightmans trio of Jackson Tung , Reece Kurrle and Ed Hung won two, two and one singles respectively however lack of success in the doubles was costly.
– Mallee Bearings 7 (Gavin Carmichael 3, Mark Dorman 2, Rohan Reimers 1) d Regional Taxation Services 4 (Matt Ljubic 2, Michael Hensgen 1)
In the final match Mallee Bearings proved too steady for Regional Taxation Services winning 7-4. In an even team display Gavin Carmichael, Mark Dorman and Rohan Reimers won three, two and one singles respectively. Carmichael inflicted a rare defeat on opposing number one Matt Ljubic winning in a tough five setter 13-11 11-9 9-11 8-11 13-11. All games were close and Ljubic rallied from an early deficit to get back in to the match. On match point as he is renowned for Carmichael had some fortune with the net as the match concluded with a rare defeat for Ljubic who has been in outstanding form over the past two years.
PENNANT TWO:
Considering some players were having their first decent hit-out for three months, the results ended up fairly close.
– Weightmans Packaging 7 (Sony Sefer, Andrew Jones, Tague Morris 2) d Mallee Meats 4 (Kevin Johns 3)
Weightmans Packaging recorded the biggest winning margin of the round, defeating Mallee Meats 7 rubbers to 4.
Weightmans Packaging were without captain Quentin Clark and number three Tom Morrison, so no doubt they will be well pleased on their return by the efforts of Sony Sefer and Tague Morris.
Sefer, number two Andrew Jones and Morris won two rubbers each, and the two fill-ins, Sefer and Morris, played like they had been doing so for years, winning the second doubles, which went to 5 sets.
Mallee Meats captain Kevin Johns won all his singles rubbers, whilst his team-mates could not help, although Terry Martin came close, losing to Sefer 12-10 in the fifth set of their five set contest. Johns and Martin won the first doubles, another five setter, against Sefer and Jones.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 26 games to 16.
– Pinnacle Packers 7 (Matt Carmichael, Peter Midgley 3) d Max Miller Carpets 4 (Jeremy Corrin, Daniel Jansen, John Fitzpatrick 1)
After a year away, Peter Midgley made a welcome return to table tennis, and duly picked up three singles wins on return, and a win for his team.
His number two, Zac Galbraith was absent, and Matt Carmichael ably subbed for him, he too winning all his singles contests. And when Midgley and Carmichael teamed in the doubles they won that too, downing Jeremy Corrin and Daniel Jansen in four sets.
Newcomer, Farqaan Ahmad, playing at number three for Pinnacle Packers had a quiet introduction, but the signs are there that there is much more to come.
For Max Miller Carpets, Corrin, Jansen and John Fitzpatrick recorded one win each, and Corrin and Fitzpatrick took the second doubles rubber against Midgley and Ahmad, a fighting five set win, having come back from two sets to one down.
Final scores: 7 rubbers to 4 and 24 games to 16.
– Mallee Bearings 6 (Jamie Kealley, Marcus Cimino 2, David Sergi 1) d Cookes Pools & Spas 5 (Ashley Morrison 3, Josh Arnold 1)

In a good team effort, captain Jamie Kealley won two of his three singles rubbers, as did number two Marcus Cimino, with number three David Sergi contributing one valuable win, in the final and deciding rubber of the night against Ryan Hensgen.
That made five rubbers, the sixth being the first doubles contest, Kealley and Cimino convincingly defeating Ash Morrison and Josh Arnold in four sets.
Cookes Pools & Spas captain Morrison won all his singles contests, and with Hensgen a straight sets win in the second doubles against Kealley and Sergi.
Josh Arnold showed a glimpse of his potential, winning one singles rubber, a four set win against Sergi.
